Should GM get a federal bailout or not?
Isn't the US supposed to be capitalist?
Doesn't capitalism say that when a company fails to adapt to a changing marketplace, they deserve to fail?
It seems to me that GM made a lot of poor decisions, and that its plummeting sales are its own fault. Yes, they're also explained by broader economic woes. But isn't it GM's fault for not adapting sooner? Instead of building the next generation of practical, fuel efficient cars they've been turning out the same old gas-guzzlers for decades now. Why should the federal government bail them out? What is there even to bail out? I think GM should fail. Isn't that what is supposed to happen in the free market?
Yes, I realize that the repercussions of GM's failure will be enormous, and that lots of jobs depend on GM. But it seems like bailing GM out would just be deluding ourselves into thinking that it still has a winning formula, when in reality it is a losing formula. America needs to wake up and stop living so unsustainably. I'm sorry for all the people who will lose their jobs, but maybe its time that we created jobs building energy efficient cars instead of gas guzzlers. That seems like more of a growth engine to me. I think GM should go bankrupt, and that its factories and equipment should be bought by brand new leadership who will start making fuel efficient cars. We can't just let the same old tired GM leadership stay in control. Its their fault GM is failing. They should be punished by losing their jobs. They need new blood.

General Motors, Ford, Chrysler and the United Auto Workers union are pouring millions of dollars into a lobbying campaign for a taxpayer bailout.

The money devoted to influence peddling in Washington would be better spent on improving quality and finding ways to reduce a bloated cost structure, but both management and UAW have decided that fleecing taxpayers is a better option.

A taxpayer bailout would be a terrible mistake. It would subsidize the shoddy management practices of the corporate bureaucrats at General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, and it would reward the intransigent union bosses who have made the synonymous with inflexible and anti-competitive work rules.

Chapter 11 protection may be precisely what is needed to put American auto companies back on the path to profitability. Bankruptcy laws specifically are designed to give companies an opportunity - under court supervision - to reduce costs and streamline operations.

Bankruptcy would not be popular in some quarters, to be sure. The bloated management structure would be streamlined and many overpaid executives would be unhappy about having to find new jobs.

The UAW would be equally upset, particularly since bankruptcy might force an end to extravagant pension benefits and inefficient workplace practices. But bankruptcy is akin to getting an alcoholic to put down the bottle. There clearly will be short-term discomfort, but compassionate people recognize that this is the best approach.

I think we should just start over period...things are in such a mess that we will probably never recover !! Everyone should go bankrupt and then begin again...A fresh new beginning !! New Rules...New Laws....New Opportunities...Wipe the slate clean for everyone....Burn the currency and purchase merchandise with rocks or sticks...then only the most energetic will be rich...Do not import anything...no oil...no goods..

We all get horses and let them graze in the yards...get a frigging goat too, let them eat the lawns ( no lawn mowers ) We plant huge gardens and everyone tends them and eats free....If you don't work you don't eat..unless you are old or sick....Free medical care for all...Paid for by your Rock and Stick Insurance Card....Free Education right up through the 8th grade...then school is over!! Go home and bake some bread and tend your gardens... feed your chickens...sew some clothes...Only Doctors would continue their educations..

No lawyers, just the old court system ( one hanging judge per courtroom) a gallows right outside the courthouse....Plenty of rope..Community celebrations..and picnics...in the town square..everyone harvest their own Christmas tree and string popcorn and really celebrate the holidays with their true meaning instead of all the commercialized bull crap....Christmas stockings with cookies and homemade candies...maybe a few small homemade gifts....

One hundred and fifty years ago they had the right idea...we have blown it !! I say again ....
START OVER !! THEN WE DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT BAIL OUTS AND HAND OUTS !!

GM screwed themselves when they decided to unionize. No offense those of you who believe in Unions, but GM workers are making $76 an hour, which includes benefits. Sound a bit much?? Also, any Union worker laid off is still paid a salary....huh?? I don't get that one. So should we bail out GM?? No, let them go bankrupt and start over. Hire employees at a reasonable rate and do not pay laid off Union workers. The same thing goes for Ford.

Rhythm

I wish the media would start calling it what it is. It's a UAW bailout.

People that have been making >62k a year for the last 10 - 30 years now need your tax dollars so that they can continue to work at an artificially high wage. I would rather just send those poor poor workers a check every week from money I earned working twice as hard for half as much.

We can pump endless billions into GM, but nothing will change as long as the UAW is there. Fix the leak first.

The UAW has long been a big contributor to the Democratic Party. No real change.

This answer is tricky. If you believe in Capitalism you do not want the govt to bail out GM.

If you believe that if GM fails it will impact 10% of the US workforce, which it will, and you think the govt should not let that happen, you like it.

Here are the issues.

Legacy costs

the VEBA plan and it needs to be funded with 25 billion

No tariffs on foreign vehicles

Gm has been planning....they will be coming out with a n electric car in 2009 and they had one that no one purchaesed. America wanted big SUV's until gas skyrocketed last year.
