Should I be forced to work 4th of July?
My supervisor said working would pay time and a half and it's an OPTION.
I work at a tennis club, we have an event here on 4th of July, the BOSS (not supervisor) is treating it as a normal day and expects everyone to be here.
I explained how I was never told, plans have been made, can't get a babysitter, etc to my supervsior. She said don't worry about it, but yet I am, this is B.S.
Corporate pays me my time for 4th fo July, is this considered MY holiday? I'm confused.

think about it. somebody has to work. in your particular
case the boss has the final say. i'm sorry but that is
just life. and yeah i know sometimes life sucks. it is
still better than being unemployed.

If you are getting paid for the holiday, it is one of your holiday's. If you choose to work you get time and a half. If you only get 3 holidays a year you should be able to choose which holiday's you want. But if you don't choose the 4th you are required to work, but you will still get time and a half. Example: I get 3 holidays a year and 1 week vacation. I chose New Year's, Christmas, and Thanksgiving. I scheduled my vacation over 4th of July, so it is paid as vacation. If they schedule me to say work on Labor day, I have no more holidays or vacation days, so I have to work it, but I get paid time and a half. If the 4th falls on one of the days that you are normally scheduled to work, then I would say you have to work it, but will get paid time and a half.

OK. The Fourth of July is our one national holiday. I would work if you can possibly arrange it, but if you can't - you can't.

If your employer chooses to give you trouble over not working, take it up with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB.gov), It is a Federal Agency which investigates unfair labor practices.

Your boss has authority over your supervisor. If your boss expects you to be there, you should be. You really should have checked into this before you made whatever plans you have made.

if its optional and you werent told you have to work they cant fire you for it, but you might piss them off and they might find another reason. i say take the chance and tell your boss boss the situation

Well if u can't work are they telling u they will fire you? If they are doing that then u will have to weigh your options. If losing your job is not an option then try to find a babysitter for your children. The 4 th if u live in the US is a holiday. U should check the employee handbook on the rules to holidays. U agreed to those terms when u got hired so that might be your answer.

It differs between companies. If it is a place that is open on the Fourth, then yes, it is treated like any other day. Some places are closed and you don't get paid, other places are closed and you WILL get paid for an average day. If you were told it IS AN OPTION than you shouldn't care. Develop a backbone and spend the day with your kid(s)... Be happy.

It is offically a Federal Holiday and your boss says not to worry about it. Chill out. It's not like your a nurse or a doctor that may have to respond to a life threatening situation.....you work at a Tennis Club for God's sake. ;-P If your boss tries to give you a hard time about it later after saying don't worry about it, then go work somewhere else. Havea safe and fun 4th of July! God Bless America!

you don't have to work...you can be fired.
Why is it that people think they're so special they don't have to work holidays. I have to work. Many in retail have to work. Cops, firefighters, ambulance drivers, paramedics, farmers and many many others have to work on all holidays.
If you don't like the job it's easy - quit. Find one that caters to doing what you want to do at hours you want to do it.

take a day off, it's better for you, money is not worth it just for one day, you need a break.
