© 2007. Sammy Z. | Should I tell the CFO? |
I'm a self-employed contracted specialist. I feel like the success of the project I've been hired to consult on is jeopardized by the IT director. Classic example - he took time off during a critical junction to deal with his car trouble, which prevented me from accomplishing anything (he has to enter the password). None of this would bother me if he didn't ALSO try to use me as his scapegoat for missing his deadline by 10 min., and harangue me verbally. I drove SEVEN hours to put out a fire with only 10 mins. notice, and now I get treated like dirt.
Numerous other problems are the result of their hiring me as a telecommuter, and there has been NO serious effort to actually create the ability to do this job remotely - all the IT department's job. He says that my Comcast digital signal is flat out not-compatible with his company's network. Sure. Even if were true, that could be fixed.
After all this, just tell me - complain to the CFO, or suck it up? Additional Details I begged off of telling the CFO what I thought of his IT director, and instead am addressing the obstacles he (Dir of IT) creates with creative end-runs. So far, it is working, and my billing is up. |

Depends on whether you want to keep the job or not.The CFO will tell you to work it out with the IT director - so you will be back where you are now.
So you decide whether 1) you want the job, and 2) if you want to succeed.
If you go to the office site every day, will you have what you need? None of the excuses you listed make up for failure of the project IF YOU ARE GETTING PAID.
Good Luck |

Suggestion: You need a specific, measurable way to track your progress. You should sit down with the IT director and determine the specific goals and objectives of your project. Be sure to let him know what you need in order to meet the expectations.
Once these are laid out, YOU need to track and report your progress against these objectives. Facts don't lie. This way if he brings anything up about how you jeopardized something, you can point to the facts. If you're unable to get this accomplished, you may want to consider finding something else. |

I think I would tell the CFO before it comes back to bite you in the butt. If you don't initiate a conversation, things will be said about YOU. As sad as it is, it's usually who ever that complains first is the one people listen to. If you want to keep your job, stick up for yourself. Good luck. |

Complain. Especially since, if I understand you correctly, you're not an actual employee but rather a contractor. However, if it backfires, you might not ever be asked to work for them again. |

Difficult situation...You seem to have legitimate issues but the truth of the matter is that they are probably more invested in their IT guy than they are with you as a contract employee.
I would talk to the CFO, but only after I had compiled enough evidence to fully support my case. And even then I would try to approach the situation very diplomatically (no finger pointing, just raising concerns that impede efficiency). |

complain complain complain...that's all you can do man. you cant let another persons dumass-ness get in the way of YOU doing YOUR job. you must let someone know or you will not be able to do anything correctly....someone needs to realize that this person shouldn't be doing what hes doing if it is costing the company money and getting innocent people in trouble.
don't worry about them thinking your a whine bag...who cares...they can call you a whine bag all they want...your still getting paid right??
make that money man! |
