cjc1127 | Should Mattel be responsible for it's overseas manufacturers' construction practices? |
I noticed today, that Mattel is recalling yet another bundle of it's China-made toys. What I'm wondering about, is why they don't just fix the problem? When are they going to start employing quality control in their products? They've sold China-made toys for decades. China didn't just recently invent lead-based paint. There has to be a point where someone holds the company in charge accountable for this.
I'm also forced to wonder, is there really a product safety issue, or is Mattel being brought into political affairs by bashing the Chinese export market? Thoughts? |

It seems to me that Mattel is being very responsible, by voluntarily recalling all of these products. The problem is the Chinese government is not doing what it should in policing this stuff. Under Chinese law an outsider cannot really "own" a factory, they have to do it in partnership with a Chinese national. Most of these factories are small by our comparison and most use outside contractors to do some of the smaller work. Mattel furnished the lead free paint to use in painting their toys. The sub-contractors probably sold the Mattel paint and bought cheaper lead based paint, thinking they would not get caught.
Also the underlying problem is called "The Walmart Effect". Walmart (the largest purchaser of toys and most other products in the world) demands lower and lower prices from its suppliers. These suppliers have to find ways to cut their overhead (and quality) in order to meet the Walmart demand. This demand of lower prices works it's way all the way down to the subcontractors making small parts for toys for Mattel. They are trying to squeeze out a profit any way they can.
So I suppose one could say the we as American consumers are adding to this problem by shopping at Walmart. |

The Chinese are notoriously poor about quality control, and because our trade with China has accellerated hugely in recent times this is why it is being heard about more. This factor wasn't an issue before because we just were not doing the kind of importing from this source that we have been recently.
When food and other goods are imported into this country from foreign sources, Government and its appropriate agencies have an obligation to monitor the safety of those goods for the protection of the American consumer. Thousands and thousands of people throughout America (myself included) have been through a period of awful anxiety over the contamination of dog food because of a dangerous component imported from China. Hundreds of beloved pets got sick and died because of it. We must be proactive in future in the monitoring of all merchandise and merchandise components from abroad, and ensure that we catch these potential dangers before they end up harming us and our loved ones.
What we have to demand is that the overseas manufacturers and suppliers of different products raise THEIR standards of quality control. Mattel has demonstrated that its own standards are in place by the very fact that they discovered the faults in these items from China and recalled them before they had a chance to pose a hazard to American Citizens. Mattel and others are to be applauded for their diligence and speedy action. |

Mattel is responsible and that is why they are recalling the items in question. Any injuries caused by the lead content will be Mattel's fault and I'm sure they will be held financially responsible also. |

It would cost lots more money to fix the problem because they need these chinese workers for cheaper labor and in order to really fix the problem is to move the manafacturing back over seas to America where these practices are constantly observed. This would be expensive because they would actually have to pay they employees real wages, with real benefits. And yes there is a product safety issue, lead paint is very serious for a child, it's difficult to keep things out of childrens mouths and a toy I thought would be the safest thing apparently not. |
