Should McDonalds and other fast food chains be taxed to pay for the public health problems caused by obesity?

No, people should take personal responcibility for themselves and their actions.

nope. it's not their problem anyway. it's with the people eating .

Tigerlillie
No, we have the choice as to what we're putting into our body. If someone has no self control and gets obese from eating that garbage all the time then that person should be charged higher insurance rates.

No. They certinaly deserve to be taxed but creating a binding legal definition of 'fast food chain' would be difficult to do. The whole excercise would be futile.

crazydave
No. If someone is stupid enough to eat junk food 3 meals a day, then they need to take responsibility for their actions.

If that happens they will only pass the cost on to the consumer. Last time I checked, nobody was being forced to eat fast food, or to consume such mass quantities of it that they become obese.

No,It's not just quality but quantity, everything in moderation. There are plenty of "skinny" people who eat McDonald's, why dose everyone have to pay for people that want to be or are just plain happy being "fat".

epbr123
No, the public should be taxed for eating fast food.

No. Everyone makes their own decisions and every
decision has a consequence. If people choose to eat
fast food that's their choice.

Karasu
Definitley not, the fatasses brought it on themselves. You cannot compare a cheeseburger to a cigarette.

PoppingBubbles<3
No because we get to choose what we eat not let them force us to.

YA is a sham
No, even foods purchased from a health food store can cause obesity if a healthy diet is not followed. Persons who are obese are the cause of their own health problems by the choices they have made.

Smudgeward
Can you prove they did it? Is anyone responsible for their own actions? If not we can't be held accountable or be responsible for anything, when we reach that state sue.

I see your point. It would just be a hard thing to do.
We would have to tax everything from Little Debbie snacks to potato chips. Soda is fatening too. Should we tax it as well? It would just be hard to draw a line on what to tax and what not to.

How about sending the taxes on alcohol and tobacco into a health fund? That way those who are afflicted with a disease related to these products, their health care would be provided through the taxes they have spent.

I guess it is something to look into. If you just want to tax fast food, that would be fine with me. I don't eat it that much myself. Maybe put those taxes into a health fund as well and those who are obese can get treatment.

No. Nobody makes you eat there. If you want something less fattening, eat at home or bring a lunch to wherever you're going- if you want a big, greasy, cheeseburger- then they've got the hookup. Nobody has a gun to your head.

hardwood
no mcdonalds does not make a person overeat
that means all resturaunts not just fast foods are causes of obesity i went out to a very up scale resturaunt yesterday and my aunt ate enough for two whose falt is that hers or the resturaunt cause the food was so good. i enjoyed the food also but i ate half the amount she ate

Big Bully
They should tax you double for thinking like that.

Now that they offer healthy alternatives, no, it is your choice to either eat healthy or not.

McDonalds doesn't force anyone to gorge themselves on their food. Eating at McDonalds or any other fast food restaurant will not automatically make you fat. Taking personal responsibility for ones behavior and what we put in our mouths is what will keep our weight down. People are obese because of not only what they eat but the quantity. Cut down portions, eat a more balanced diet, and exercise and you will keep your weight down or lose weight. Just because there is food left on the table doesn't mean that you should wolf it down. We need to look at this for what it is. The government wants to use this as an excuse to add yet another tax on us. It isn't McDonalds who will pay this tax, it will be their customers. We were told that the cigarette manufacturers should pay for healthcare because their products caused harm to the public. States filed suit, got judgments and received huge sums of money. It didn't come from the manufacturers, it was and continues to be paid by those buying their products. When I was growing up you could buy a pack of cigarettes for $0.35. Most places it is 10 times that figure. Much of that money goes to pay additional taxes to states for healthcare. Where did the money go? It certainly didn't go for healthcare. We don't need more taxes on cigarettes, fast food or anything else. We need to elect representatives who know how to balance a budget and cut expenditures. If these people get away with levying an additional tax on McDonalds or any other fast food restaurant, we will never see any of the money. It will mysteriously disappear and people will still be fat, just as those smoking cigarettes will still get cancer.

anthonyky
Why should it be only the fast food places? Most restaurants serve portions so big that they should be for 2 people.

Dr. DeLight
They should be permanently closed as welll as all the other business that sell or distribute poision.
