Curious | Should businesses be allowed to monitor employee use of company telephones and the Internet? |
More than one-third of U.S. employees are electronically monitored at work, says a survey by the Privacy Foundation. Employers are increasingly checking workers' e-mail and Internet cruising, thanks to inexpensive technology that allows companies to monitor and reduce personal use of business phones and computers. Some firms report reductions of 40 to 60 percent in nonbusiness use of company telecommunications, with major cost savings. Monitoring reveals other problems with communications at work as well. Chevron settled a $2.2 million lawsuit brought by female employees over an offensive interoffice e-mail, and Dow Chemical fired more than 50 people for e-mailing pornography. "Almost every workplace lawsuit today, especially a sexual harassment case, has an e-mail component," according to Nancy Flynn, executive director of the ePolicy Institute. But privacy advocates object to intrusive monitoring and insist that at the very least employers should put up warnings about surveillance. "The practice of keeping employees uninformed about the details of monitoring may be tantamount to entrapment," says the Privacy Foundation. Hiring those you can trust and providing reasonable guidelines for personal use of company property are suggested alternatives to monitoring. Should firms monitor employee use of company telephones and Internet access? |

Yes it's their phones and Internet. There is no privacy argument as long as it's theirs. Most people use their own cell phones. The federal laws prohibits cell phone taps. It is not really intrusive monitoring as long as it's not recorded, therefore it's not illegal. It's unlikely to see a self police policy in to days times. Should firms use trust and providing reasonable guidelines alternatives to stealing supplies? Same strokes different folks............ |

Absolutely!
People are paid by the company to do a job and perform the duties required of them throughout their work hours.
Employees should however, be informed of the company's PC and internet usage policies when joining the business.
Compare a solid night's sleep with a solid day's work. Each time you "surf the net' you are waking up and then have to try to get back to sleep. A good sleep will never be acquired, just like a task well done will never be acquired if you continually interupt it.
People who spend many hours each day doing what they shouldn't be are basically stealing from their employer and usually someone else in the business has to pick up the slack. |

Definitely. If you are paying someone to do something and they're surfing the net, you should take measures via HR to immediately advise the persons this won't be tolerated with verbal warning, written warning, 1 day suspension etc leading to firing. Sure they should receive a warning that their use is being monitored when hired, but who in their right mind doesn't already suspect this? Heck, they deserve to be fired if they where so ignorant. I can't believe the waste of time and money the legal system puts up with in hearing these cases. If I were judge, I'd give these people a swift kick in the butt with a hefty legal bill... for waste of the court's time!!!! |

Actually, the main reason why a lot of them 'monitor' internet and phone use is due to the fact that a lot of employees would misuse the system if given half the chance, but knowing that they are being recorded would allow them to keep track of that as well as use it for training purposes.
This allows the company to allow others that may be in training to understand the consequences of such misuse.
For instance, my 'previous' partner, works for the state. It was found out that he was using the phone system, which costs the state money, to talk 'explicitly' to someone in another state. Granted I may not be to happy about this, what upsets me the most is the fact that he was using state resources to do his dirty work instead of actually paying for it himself!
And plus also, the companies do have their rules and regulations. If you can't follow them and wish to break them, then why are you working there when you signed on to work for them in the first place knowing what those rules and regulations were? |

if i am on their time, using their equipment, yeah i don't have a problem being monitored. What if you hired me to clean your house, i charge you for 8 hours only i was finished in 5 and spent three on your computer...would you think this fair? Not only do i do it but your child care provider and your lawn guy does it.. next thing you know the child care provider is making a porn with the lawn guy being taped by me the housekeeper and we sell it over your computer and make money from it...maybe this is extreme but it has happened...it can get out of control and quickly. |

yes they should |

Firms should be allowed to and should monitor the use of their equipment. Be it the internet or the phone or the computer for personal use. The company is paying for your time and that time should be spent giving the company what they are paying you for.

i think they should be allowed to... the people are at work after all and should not under anycircumstance be using the phones or computers for inapropriate personal use. checking email once in a while is one thing, but checking it to recieve or send porn is unacceptable in the work place |
