Should large companys where the majority of employees are paid so low they qualify for welfare benefits?
Be banned from the stock market (example Walmart and a large amount of manufacturing facilitys)

Can they? So why not ?

Interesting. As in all things in life, it is a question of supply and demand. I don't subscribe to the mantra that the more educated you are, the more you should earn. I believe it does boil down to supply and demand of talent. For example, my friend never went to college but had an incredible knack for modifying texturizing machines to run faster and more efficiently than anyone else. It's not surprising he's a VP of that division now. The question is how many people can do a particular job and if the answer is just about anyone, then clearly, the company doesn't have to pay top dollar to fill the position.

"Amy m" you have your "act" together and earned your way to a successful future. I have heard your toughts many times and we must remember our Federal government sets "minimum wage", not corporations. This in mind Walmart and others pay higher when not necessary. Why? Due to an overwhelming number of applicants the necessary workforce will always be available. Employees of any company can apply for government assistance and will be considered, possibly approved for some, in the event income is too low for their needs.

A female friends husband left to separate. Without going into detail divorce was finalized with her agreeing on his contributions which were too low. She had a good job but low pay and applied for benefits. She was awarded "Food Stamps" and other government supported programs.

People NEED to become responsible for their choices in life. Improve through education, stop "hanging" with negative people blaming their lives on others, stay positive. NOT happy in life, CHANGE the way you live.

I shop Walmart a lot in North Atlanta area and have known employees as well. I never have heard complaints of poor pay, benefits, unsatisfactory working conditions, etc. Service is friendly, help is always fast, employees are smiling, I do not see what some talk about.

In Georgia, especially in rural areas away from Atlanta, large manufacturers from the Northeast, California, etc. operate because these parts of our state have lower costs to live, therefore, labor costs is decreased. Some of our smaller towns, especially, Central/South Georgia would not exist without manufacturers, low pay or not.

"Amy m" you have done well. Do not let opinions of others form yours before talking to Walmart employees or other companies you have concern and do research. Any job to some that "refuse" to improve themselves is a choice made.

Good Luck, stay positive. Continue your personal growth.

No, where does it say that companies have to pay a "living wage". A company exists to make a profit for it owners by providing a product or service. To high a price and no one buys. The company will pay the minimum wage necessary to attract the competent workers necessary to provide that good or service. Markets work, if wages are artificially raised by law there will be fewer jobs and a shrinking economy.

The problem is that most people think they are entitled to a nice house, 40" plus HDTV, premium cable package, new car, cell phones for every family member, etc. As we move further into a world economy our standard of living will decrease because those $75 an hour including benefits jobs will not allow American made products to be competitive in the world market.

The answer is get an education and then you won't have to work in Wal-Mart.

what do you think a WalMart cashier deserves? $50,000 a year????

Investors like low income, if you understand the market you would see that stocks go up in price when a company cuts cost. Think about it as an investor, if you got money invested in stocks and you hope to receive gains, don't you think that it would be to your benefit for the company your investing in keep cost down? When these corps keep cost down there is more money to distribute to the share holders. Higher cost, expenses, and debt from a company mean less money for share holders-

I do believe that people who do go to college deserve a higher salary. You can't expect a WalMart worker to get the salary of a doctor whose spent 10 yrs in Med School.
Educated people spend 4-6 yrs of study and spend thousands in tution and the sacrafice rewards them a good career.
People who think they don't need school are fooolish.
If you feel that companies who hire uneducated people should raise the wages then you better expect prices on merchadise to go higher and that won't happen because the US economy is having a hard time competeing as it is. This is one of the reasons that so many companies are leaving the US and moving manufacturing to other countries. What the government really needs to do is stop outsourcing and bring more jobs home, but they can't do that if employees with low education keep demanding all these high salaries and benefits- Just the Facts

If you choose to work at WalMArt and feel under paid get different JOb and go to school. I see how people cry the blues on TV over thier Walmart job but the reality is no one is making you work there and its not a job to make a life long career out of. It may be good as a job while you go to school but you cannot expect it to pay you top salary for cashing out and sweeping floors. You can't expect to live high on the pie if you can't make the sacrafice of school. Its just the way it goes.

It sounds like your Anti School and that is not going to get you anywhere.
Not to be rude Amy, but the average collage graduate with a BA can earn about 60,000 a year. If you have out earned that in the regular job world then maybe your an exception. However you'll never have that education and a GED can only rise you so far- The world is getting more demanding in technology. Old fashion home skills are not going to get you far. In the next 10 years its going to get even more progressive and you may be getting by now. However if you were really smart you would be getting that education as soon as possible. WalMart someday is not going to need many employees because of technology. I am sure you see how many stores are already placing self check outs. Jobs are going to be getting smaller and smaller thus squeezing out the little guy. You can't win this one because you can't defeat a growing and progressing world. You have to go with the flow. Fish can't swim upstream and those that try end up jumping and getting swiped by a predator.
