Should "The Big Three" American Auto Makers get Federal aid to keep them in business? ?
Haven't they had time to build cars that American can trust more than or as much as the trust that the world has in Japanese, Korean and German designed cars? Have they stood by their products as much as other auto makers? I mean...how much money is Toyota, Nissan and Hyundai losing? Are they about to go out of business also?

First of all, I want to tell you that Ford makes SUPERB cars. I had a ford escort and the thing just wouldn't die. You couldn't kill it. It was the BEST car I ever had. (And I've had two volkswagons and a toyota among others) It's not for making not good cars they are having problems, it's the greed of the unions demanding disproportionally high pay and benefits for what is essentially menial work.

The other thing I want to say is that what I find interesting is that we had no problem bailing out industries that are essentially like gossamer, like dust; credit companies and mortgage companies that produce nothing but pieces of paper that are like play money. However when an industry comes along that really produces something, something tangible, something real that is worth something, all of a sudden we're not sure we want to help them. America needs manufacturing. We can't be strong if we don't produce anything. Let the other guys rot but save the car companies.

The wage structure and the work rules must change on the labor side.
Did you know that every office building that houses GM workers must have a union electrician on site to change the light bulbs ? There must also be a union millwright on site to move desks, filing cabinets, etc.
What if no light bulbs are out, or no equipment needs to be moved ?
Then they play cards.

On management side, there must be a reduction in the levels of bureaucracy. A good idea can get passed back and forth between level 4 and level 7 for a good year before its implemented.
There is no accountability for good decisions or bad decisions because its management by committee. If the top brass is worth the big salary, lets see your skill sets. Congress should demand cchanges on both sides before trying to save a system that has been a proven failure.

I'm against all bailouts of private companies, and this is someone from the Detroit area.

If a car company can't get people to voluntarily give their money to them, why should the government force those same people to give their money to them?

Yes, in the short term it will be painful, but it's more painful and more destructive in the long term to keep bailing out companies for poor decisions and poor products.

I think instead of giving tax payer money to ANY of the "Big Three" auto makers in the United States,...it would be best to give coupons to people that can only be used to purchase a car from one of the "Big Three." Plus a mandatory 150,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty on every car. For too long they have screwed the public with substandard cars. My Ford Escort was the worst car I have EVER had. People burned up in the Ford Pinto from a problem that Ford was fully aware of. GM cars, (some of them) have "composite"(plastic) intake manifolds that corrode and crack, The gasket material comes apart and ends up floating in the coolant, causing cars to over heat. Costly repairs, VERYcostly repair are laid on the owners backs. The American Auto makers want tax payer money to bail them out when they will not do a damn thing for the tax payers/consumers who purchase thier products. Why have Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, and German made cars gained far more trust from Americans AND the world? They need to look into this as the United States taxpayers have bailed out Chrysler once before under the Jimmy Carter Adminstration.
Perhaps the bail out could be done AFTER all the CEO's and other management have been fired and replaced with Japanese and Germans and after the Unions accept the same wagesm benefits rules and conditions that the Japanese workers get. Why should we tax payers keep paying for the mistakes and wrong and greedy choices made by the Auto makers and the Unions? Unions are needed but they have to weigh the demands they make against the factories being shut down and look at how many MANY people WORLD WIDE trust Toyota more than any American designed car.
Do not we Americans build some of the best Military equipment that the world has ever seen???? Why can't we build the best cars or cars that Americans trust???

Yea , the big 3 and UAW has been shortsighted and have been their own worst enemy over the years but here are some disturbing facts. The Japanese and Korean governments subsidize their exported cars to the United States making them cheaper and boosting their overall profits. To top it off, do you think they'd let American auto companies set up shop on their turf with open arms the way we do????? The past 30 yrs we've rolled out the red carpet, real estate, and tax free hospitality to Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and now Hyundai. They have no retirement base to worry about while domestic automakers have 2 to 3 retiree's per worker adding 1500 dollars per vehicle. The Asians have protectionist policies to our exports and we lose valuable american jobs. How fair is that?? Competion is good but we need FAIR competition across the board to protect our valuable manufacturing jobs. You cant have a nation that doesnt build anything!! It's probably to late in a lot of ways. A bailout is bad publicity and I see envious animosity toward these good paying jobs growing worse. No bailout may be the end of these 100 plus year old american companies. What a shame. It really makes me proud to see an American flag flapping out the window of a Toyota or Honda. Welcome to America! Home of the new Big 3, Toyota , Nissan and Honda. I already feel that warm economic patriotism!

If they do go out of business, there will be hundreds of thousands of people put out of work in the associated car industries.

Do you think they should be saved ?

no. managment should haved looked ahead. when you see Toyota, nissan and hyundai selling smaller cars faster than the large size cars the big 3 should had themselves started selling smaller cars.next the top managment should not have gotten those big bonses when their sales were dropping. next eventhou the UAW is saying that their worker wages of $25.00 hr plus zero cost of benifits is not/did not cause their downfall. whereas Toyota and other forigen auto cos. pay $10.00 - 12.00 hr the workers pay an % of health coverage = to building an car cheaper than what GM, Ford, Chrysler can do. then I say no to any FEDERAL BAILOUT.

Yes we probably need to. We are in the classic space of being between a rock and a hard place. Imagine, if you will, the following scenario:

• Should all of the Detroit Three's U.S. operations cease in 2009, the first-year total employment impact would be a loss of nearly 3 million jobs in the U.S. economy—including 239,341 direct job losses at the three auto companies; 973,969 secondary jobs at auto supply companies; and more than 1.7 million jobs at other employers from the reduced spending by those jobless workers. The employment picture would recover somewhat in 2010 and 2011, due to increased U.S. production by foreign-based automakers and dislocated workers finding new jobs.

• Even if just one or more of the auto companies goes down, the first-year losses would still be nearly 2.5 million jobs in the U.S. in the first year before coming back somewhat in the second and third years. That's because the domino effect of one major automaker going under would push several financially fragile auto suppliers into insolvency, which would interrupt production at the remaining car companies.

• In economic terms, a 50% cut in the Detroit Three's U.S. operations would reduce personal income by more than $125.1 billion in the first year, and $275.7 billion over three years.

Center for Automotive Research (CAR) Chairman David Cole, one of the authors of the study, says legislators and members of the public who doubt the U.S. auto industry is worth saving "should realize the costs of it failing are far greater than the $25 billion in loans the industry is seeking."

NO. what they should do if give the money or a coupon to americans to purchase the cars that they make. this would help them with sales, help americans get cars at a less than ridiculous price and stmulate the economy AND bail out the companies that give CEOs millions in bonuses.
