Should we blame the supermarkets (VONS, Ralphs, Albertsons etc..) for our nation's obesity?
I'm doing a paper on if supermarkets cause obesity. Please I'd like to hear everyones opinions!

Nope. I blame the fat people still sitting on their rear ends and eating. If the stores didn't sell any Cheetos, donuts or ice cream they would not carry them any longer. They sell well so they order more and sell those also. Last I checked all of those stores sold fruits and vegetables as well.

Sure, sue them along with the fast food industry and the snack food industry. Might as well include the all the restaurants that feed us HUGE portions of their high fat foods and all the 'all-you-can-eat' buffet's as well. How bout the chemical companies that developed all the bad ingredients and additives that are terrible for us (Trans-Fat, High Fructose Corn Syrup, endless dyes and artificial flavors, etc) sue them too.........

Wait a second, what ever happened to personal responsibility? It's not their fault we have an obesity epidemic, it begins with ourselves. If we just stopped eating the crap that is marketed to us (sue the food manufacturers and marketing agencies too!) and eat HEALTHY foods in REASONABLE portions and get off out fat butts for 30 minutes per day, then maybe, just maybe: 1) we will slowdown and reduce obesity and 2) force all the food sources to greatly reduce or eliminate the crap they sell and replace it with healthier alternatives.

No, it is the fast paced, to many things I have to do, working mother because we can't make ends meet society that we live in. Mothers use to have time to cook and make things from scratch, planning better meals, teaching our children how to cook. Now it is rush rush rush, I'm pooped lets get something easy to fix, reheat, eat out. Get some sleep and do it all over again. And the more prepared it is, the less healthy it is for us. If we could get the dollar to be worth more, moms wouldn't have to be out in the working world. So in the long run I blame it on the economy.

Supermarkets "cause" obesity by giving poor choices to consumer? Okay, then maybe supermarkets "cause" drunk driving by selling alcohol, and "cause" arson fires by selling matches, and "cause" tooth decay by selling candy for Halloween or even sacks of refined sugar than can be (horrors) carmelized and put onto apples. Why is this the first we're hearing of this right-wing conspiracy to make us all lethargic blimps?

No, it's not the supermarkets or the fast food chains. People are quick to blame these institution, but they neglect to blame themselves. Many Americans are obese due to their daily activity and eating habits. People just don't have time to prepare a meal, instead taking the quick way out from McDonald and Burger King. George Ritzer wrote a book called "Mcdonaldization" which explain the marketing techniques of fast-food restaurants. Read the book and it really interesting.

All the problems caused by not getting enough sleep, may ultimately lead to death. I read at http://www.projectweightloss.com/index.php why obesity is caused by insomnia. Few know the benefits and, most important, the consequences of getting too little sleep.

It's not any of those things. It's the individuals fault for making bad choices. And how would any grocery store be at fault? That's where everyone goes to get their food to cook at home.

2D G
No, it's the Fast Food restaurants, not the grocery stores.

If anything Costco causes obesity for it's bulk sales.

yes and no, its the ingredients in the food that cause obesity. go to Mudutu.com and learn about health.
learn about High fructose corn syrup, Hydrogenated oils, MSG, Aspartame, and other bad lngredients.

watch some parts of Fat, MSG, Aspartame, It's all in the food!
that will explain alot.
