pooty36 | Shouldn't a supervisor make more than his/her employees? |
I am an apartment manager and have been for a very long time. I am making sevaral thousand dollars less per year than one of my employees. I have been wih the company 5 years longer and I am upset. I do not want to leave, but this is very upsetting. How can I be expected to take responsibility for the actions of team members who are being monetarily rewarded more than I am ? Please only serious answers.
I have relocated a few times for this company and I am a very responsible manager. I have many awards from this company and feel like the only thing to do is to leave. Additional Details I am a business manager and the subordinate is maintenance personell. I do not dislike this person at all. I would like to make a fair wage and think it is ridiculous that I am RESPONSIBLE for everything that occurs at my property and all staff; however, one actually makes more money than me. Less tenure, less education, but is a male. I don't want him to make less, I want what is fair. |

I have seen this before, but it's really hard to say why they would. Maybe policies have changed in their HR department to pay more to new people, or just more qualified people. Maybe he does more work than you do.
This will bother you until you do something about it, so ask. |

Generally, yes, the supervisor should make more than the employees he/she supervises. There are some exceptions. For example, I once was in charge of H/R, and I had a Medical Officer reporting to me. Since that's an MD, there was a significant pay allowance for the Med. Ofcr., but I viewed that as an exception based on education and profession.
In your case, I would think that unless there is something unusual to justify the subordinate's higher pay, you definitely should be making more. Have you ever had a conversation with your manager about this? |

Yes - You should make more. And for you to make less is not fair especially considering everything you have done for that company.
Have you approached your boss about this? have they given you a reason as to why the employee makes $5,000 more, when it's you who should be making $7,000 more??
Maybe they don't realize? Any possibility this is an error on their behalf? Really you have nothing to lose by asking questions, and asking for a raise.
Good Luck! |

Are you being paid a fair salary for the position and for the time you've been there? |

And what does your supervisor say about it? |

I would say always, yes; unless you are working part-time and he is working full-time. |

In your case i think you should be paid more than the average employee in such a situation and more than the one you mentioned. If you can get a higher paying job and a better position with less stress I would go for it. otherwise you may want to bring this up with your boss.
I pay some people more than I get my self some times,
usually just because I can. some times it depends on the work.
Edit:
If you can't work it out with your boss then dump him/her on their head and find a better job. now that you put in the details I think you need something better one way or another |

the biggest reason women get paid less is because they simply won't ask for a raise.
you need to ask for a raise at least once a year. I guarantee you the employee you mentioned, is doing exactly that.
I'll bet you felt content and happy with the money you were making all the way up to the point you compared the salary with the employee. Am I right?! |

Ask for a raise.
If no raise is forthcoming-- put out some job apps. When you have an offer you like, it's about time for you to bounce. |

Honestly this is the type of situation that causes companies to not reveal other peoples salaries. Honestly you need to make sure that this persons salary is actually what it is. No need to jump the gun. Then you need to have a serious conversation with your employeer about a raise. Also maybe do some searching and maybe you can find a position comperable to what you are in now that pays more.
This person you are hating might have degrees in areas and subjects that warrented the company to pay them what they are making. |

I am a physician. I will make >40% more then my supervisor. ( I hope my supervisor can handle it.) I intend to learn as much as possible to get promoted and move up within the agency to get out of this predicament. |
