I don't think they will actually have your bank details, just contact details...

It is most likely a slightly underhand tactic by the company that called to try and gain credibility by mentioning HSBC. These things are often generated (as mentioned) by missing one of those tick boxes about trusted third parties... Indeed, they are often the result of something you have purchased on a credit agreement (television, computer, insurance etc.) that HSBC provide the finance for.

I would just put it in the bin and ignore it.

Knownow't
There will have been a little box you had to tick somewhere along the line if you did not want your details sent to other marketing agencies....as long as they are not giving out confidential info like account details etc they are allowed to do this unless you opt out....I agree, but where do you think all the junk mail comes from?

chances are there was something in a form you once filled out saying they are allowed to share your information, they always put it in the tiny print at the bottom so no one ever reads it

That little box left unticked. The small print. Idiots at the bank. Or a classic case of unintentionnaly disclosed data.

Complain. It always helps.

It happens all the time apparently, I'm sure my bank has given out my details because there is no way i would get the amount of stuff from credit card companies without their input. And ones details can be given out from the electoral register, apparently the councils sell the lists to whoever and one has to look closely at the form to see where it says to opt out of having your details sold on. Very very small print.
This is without all the information that's been lost in post on peoples details like child benefit and sundry other government agencies. We are not safe, and now they want to introduce ID cards, what the f***k for, they know everything about us already.

Search for the Financial Services Ombudsman and register a complaint. It sounds like they have broken the law.
They cannot divulge such information under the Data Protection Act.
