Yes it is true. Nike corporation had a very large facility in Burma for years. The Burmese government allowed children under the age of 8 to work in their factories making shoes for rich americans to purchase. Burma and several other indonesian governments are very amicable to big businesses that will come in and provide the government with funding. The plight of the Burmese people is well publicized. |

well yes and no.
nike's manufactoring places are in countries that have child labor, and the people who run them run them like sweatshops on the poor children.
but its also no because its not like the head of NIKE says "lets get some children to make our stuff", they probably know that there are kids working in those shops, but its more the individual country than the company.
at least i hope it is. |

Forget about your society, where you have two working parents with lots of food, clothes, money, opportunity for good education and a social safety net in case the worst happens.
There are places in this world, that if children can't get a job, the family starves, Families that are not allowed birth control, that have many children, have unproductive land, no clean water and no social safety net. Everyone must work and pool their pennies to buy enough food for today...Tommorrow is a whole other problem. There are places where young kids spend all day in the garbage dump scrounging for anything sellable, or any scrap of something that can be eaten...
I won't go on and on, But a lot of the world is very badly off compared to us.
They want your "Sweat-shop" jobs, these jobs are the "Good" jobs in their country, these jobs are the best they have ever had, they are making more money than is necessary to live, they are slowly developing into a middle class
So maybe the big corporations are taking advantage of poor people who will accept less money that what our unions demand here, to do the same job, but they are glad to have the jobs.
There is more than one side to each story, so lets not be quick to make that kid go back to starving in the garbage dump. |

I do know for a fact that places like Walmart, Target, & even Starbucks get most of their products from different countries who happen to be very poor countries. They purchase their products for a very low price, and in turn sell those products to us here in the US for A LOT more than they pay for them. These people are so desperate for money that they will sell the items to the US for basically anything they can get for them. Also, many people in these countries get paid only a few cents per hour while they are manufacturing these products for the corporations to sell. A lot of these countries employ children because their families are so poor. So, I would say that these corporations do not personally hire children, but by buying these products from countries where they have children working, and getting paid low wages they are in fact supporting child labor. |

It happens, yes. But many corporations are taking steps to ensure that their overseas suppliers aren't engaging in abusive labor force practices. However, as long as consumers continue to use price as a primary decision point when making a purchase, these practices will never entirely disappear. Few large american corporations actually engage directly in sweatshopping, but they buy from suppliers who do. |
