This is done for legal reasons.
Checking receipts cannot be arbitrary. They "check" everyone's receipt,so in case they REALLY need to check someone's purchases, they may scan the receipt without being accused of profiling.
It would be extremely difficult for anyone to prove that a greeter looked at their receipt more thoroughly than others.
It is disturbing to read some of these responses that seem to dismiss retail theft as trivial
All retailers make us consumers pay for their losses by charging higher prices. |

they usually look for certain items on the receipt. the ones that most ppl shoplift. and thats y it looks like they r just skimming it. but they r looking for some items. but it also depends on the person reviewing it. cause some of them dont care and they just let u leave |

I was at a Walmart the other day buying camping stuff for my kids and spent over $700 and because it was camping stuff the majority of it wasnt in bags so when I got to the door the looked over the receipt really really quick so I know they are supposed to check the things that arent in bags but he clearly didnt he just wanted me to believe he did. So, its just some of them dont do their job ans check. |

they look at the receipt for larger items that aren't in a bag or under the cart. |

I worked at wal-mart. Most of the greeters are 2 years younger then God and couldn't read the fine print on a reciept to save their lives so for the most part they they don't read a damn thing. They are just there to distract shoplifters. But the alarms work just as well. |

they don't look, it's a waste of time. the more items you buy and the longer your receipt is the less likely they are to check it. but if you buy only a few items he'll probably check it out. put yourself in his shoes, if somebody walks up with 8 bags and a receipt a mile long you wouldn't want to sit there and check everything. plus it's wal-mart, they make billions of dollars a year so if somebody steals a $20 DVD it's peanuts to them. $20 to wal-mart is like a fraction of a penny to regular people. |

No the greeter just glances at the receipt and checks it off, if you was to have something you did not pay for the metal detectors would go off. |
