So what do you do with a guy that rips his clients off to the tune of $50 billion?
Most people can't even conceive of a number that large.
As an example, let's assume you made $5 million a year (a reasonable amount).
It would take you 10,000 years to save $50 billion.
Do you think public executions would stop this kind of greed?

Yes, I know you're speaking of Bernard Madoff.

The man was already wealthy, by even modest measurements. What compells someone to get so obsessively greedy? It isn't like he was shipping his profits to help some nation get economically back on it's feet. It's not like he funded money to assist hurricane or earthquake victims.

It was pocketed. Plain and simple.

Execution?

Well, if we look at history, yes, executions took place for such extravangances that were built on the broken backs of poor people.
During the French Revolution of the early 1800's, the aristocrats were executed...but then it went to the level of a feeding frenzy, and many many innocents (many of whom were merely employees!) were executed by the guillotine. A gross over-carriage of justice, let's admit.

I can't see executing them, but I do see bruising their pride - heavily.

I would make it such that the primary decision-maker (this example would be Bernard Madoff) into prison for the rest of his life.
Ok, Agreed and done.

Next, I would seize ALL of his assets (tangible & intangible...American and International [hidden? weed 'em out!]), sell what can, and begin paying back those who financially suffered from this greed-train. The late "investors" may only get 10% back, but it would be something.

The familys of these financial bullys would wind up with absolutely nothing. They can NOT accept assistance of any ANY form from friends, strangers, replacement of these seized assets. They would have to live in a Section 8 type apartment, take the bus to work. They would loose all income-producing assets (whether related or not), and be forced to face the day-to-day struggles of living like the rest of us "Joe's" have to face. They'd work for what they can get. They would lose all pensions, 401k's, 403b's, stocks, bonds, life insurance policies, the entire gammut.

And it would be these persons: Hubby and wife, adult children over 18. Irregardless of the level of their involvement in their parent's debauchery. All would be effected and corrected. Trickle down to the 2nd - 3rd generation??? Hmmmm....

So, the primary henchmen would pay with prison time, loss of all assets, loss of homes, autos, planes, ships, etc. The remaining family members would start from * LITERAL* economic scratch. Period. That would leave a very strong impression. That would make these type characters think twice.

Then again, maybe not. Greed can be a terrible draw and motivation! You can't always sway people away from doing wrong deeds, no matter how much you educate them, motivate them toward positive attitudes and habits, people are people !

It might seem a proper way to send a message but in the end, all you've done is to put a price on human life... which is the same as what those same corporates try and do each and every day.

Personally, I'd think that duct taping him (or her) to a tree next to a colony of fire ants and then covering him in powdered sugar, would be a far better idea.

In fact, you could probably make a killing selling tickets, lol!

that might deter most crimes!

I totally agree. Why not make an example of these people to deter anyone from doing it again. But unfortunately they probably wont even get jail time. Since the government is in the business of stealing from people that makes it OK. Look at how the Bush's have got away with bankrupting companies and walking away. Luckily God will have the final say and then maybe they will pay.

Public executions haven't stopped murderers so why would it stop people that are made of greed?
How do your spend or what do you do with $50 Billion. Wonder how much he gave to charity or used to help other people - zero
Put him in solitary confinement with no visitors or anything to read or listen to. Confiscate all properties, assets, etc. Do not consider what anyone in the family needs for their living, etc. Afterall they have already benefited and probably knew and participated or at least helped hide the crime.
Prison - 1 day per dollar should work, don't you think?
