Hello,
(ANS) YES! I have to completely agree with your argument that the big four supermarkets have now become FAR far too powerful. In the same sense that the big four banks have also become far too powerful.
How you (or we) can change this for the better I have no idea to be honest??
**I have noticed that if you look at what Tesco actually offer on their shelves, I think what you will realize is that Tesco have terrible consumer choice. What do I mean? well take any products in Tesco and you will find that 80-90% of the products are in fact Tesco's own brand (cheap & poorer quality) and only 5-10% are other makers brands. You will find this is true for almost ALL products in a Tesco store.
**Tesco so called fresh fruit is nothing of the kind!! The vast majority has been flown hlaf way around the world, has been stored in massive freezers and is only put onto the customer shelves when stocks run low. Take Bananas if you can find a ripe banana in a Tesco store it would be a miracle!! as they are always green & under ripe and the same goes for Avacardoes too.
**No! Tesco's is a CON and Tescos offers LESS customer choice in my opinion.

We don't really care, as consumers we want to save as much as we can, without walking feet off.
In the long run say 10-20years with the cost of fuel rising and supermarkets buying each other out. Wee shops and local produce with be back with a boom. farmers will be wagging they're tails and wee shops ripping you like never before. |

Total Nonsense.
All these people bleat on about the supermarkets.
Basically if you know anything about retail, then you will know that ......
If you site your shop near to an M+S, Asda, Tesco, or any other BIG name retailers, you will have a BUSIER more profitable shop through increased footfall.
If you site your shop next to Dave+Sons (the butchers) or Joe Public (greengrocers) Ltd or Stellas (Hairdressing) then you are going to have a very quiet shop which will close very quicky!!!! No retailer wants to be stuck in the crap part of town!
Too many people who don't have a clue about retail bleat on about small shops closing. Normally it's because the owners;
A) Haven't got anyone to hand the business down to or are asking a stupid price for it.
B) Really aren't proper retailers and are running the shop as some sort of 'hobby'
If you look at someone like Dixons - they started selling traditional camera's, but they evolved with the market.
Where do you think they'd be now if they had just carried on flogging cameras no-one wanted.
A lot of small retailers don't have the nous to update their lines and move with the market, hence why they tend to close down more.
It would be wise for people to remember that TESCO was founded from a wheelbarrow in Whitechapel Lane in the East End. AND IF THEY CAN DO IT THEN ANYONE CAN!!! |

The power they have is equal to the power that we the consumer give them. |

The answer is yes of course, but its not a new phenomenen, all of our areas small shops that were useful and good have gone now, because the council firstly in their infinite wisdom put up their rates/rents to an extortionate level and then allowed the supermarkets free range. We lost two butcher shop, the best fishmongers, two greengrocers, and countless others small businessness that were integral to our community. The same has happened right across the country, and now we have the fact that they can charge what they like and collude in price fixing, cheating the customer and farmer alike. |
