Emily Hobhouse | Tesco's massive profits. Do they take advantage of their staff? |
I worked for Tesco's for a while. If we worked overtime, they insisted on giving us "time off in lieu" instead of actuallypaying us overtime. The fact that we were working overtime because we were so busy and never got our time off, didn't seem to bother anyone. I get really angry when I see how much their profits are when they wouldn't pay me my pittance. What do you think? |

I always hated the time off in lieu thing - it's as though you are doing their work and paying yourself.
I wonder what the Tesco manager would say if I presented myself at his checkout with a trolley full of groceries and said "I'm not going to pay you for this but you can have the week off instead."? |

Sorry but from an outsiders perspective Tesco are one of the best employers in the country.
They pay a reasonable hourly rate, comply with all Health and Safety / working time regulations, they offer good holiday allowances and sick pay. A friend is pregnant and her husband will get ÂŁ1000 when the baby is born + 3weeks paid paternity leave, you wont get that in most other places + a 10% discount of everything!
You should work in catering you will really see what poor working conditions are |

my wife's sister works for tesco - she's in management so cant speak for shop floor workers but would imagine shop floor workers get overtime paid.
she is no different to any other middle management private sector employee. she has to work the hours the business demands and does not get paid overtime - its normal in management contracts. she gets paid more than the industry average and gets 29 days holiday a year and probably works 45-50 hours a week which i would say is normal for mid management. she gets a yearly bonus and good share options with private healthcare and a pension which the company chips into.
I think they treat her reasonably well and she is certainly not taken advantage of.
Tesco are only in the headlines with their profits because their senior management have a very good long term plan which is working better than their competitors plans. Tesco appeal to the poor as they have their value range which is good quality and they appral to the middle classes and the richer among us as they cater for all those too.
Most of the other supermarkets have tried to cater for a particular type of person - asda, morrisons, aldi, lidl is all cheap rubbish, sainsburys, M&S, waitrose have all tried to pitch against the richer shopper. Tesco cater for everybody with good products - good on them for making a plan work and making good money from it. |

I am not sure of TESCO.
But we all prefer to give a day off to an employee as every employee needs rest. Any amount of money can not get you rest.
If we compensate overtime with totally with money, then the employee may collapse.
Hence it is always desired to have some rest between the work schedules.
Generally, we can not assure the efficiency of the employee during the overtime. He may work very well for the regular 7-8 hours of work. If the same person is continuing for another 4 hours, once can be sure that the productivity is low. We are not
talking about exceptions here. However the some companies pay double the salary during the overtime period. One would get an additional day's salary for working 4 hours, if money is paid.
We also prefer to compensate with a holiday as there is no cash outflow.
Ideally, HR shall have a compromise formula to negotiate holiday vs money.
All the best
regards
Ramesh

Time off in lieu is used by many companies. However you should have got that time off. I'm presuming you had clock cards so if you wanted to be compensated you could fight it. It would really bother me to know I was working and not getting paid for it, so perhaps the rest didn't realise they weren't. It does angry me how little retail staff get paid. I worked in retail for a number of years, worked my *** off and got paid little. In comparsion I'm getting paid twice as much now and don't do that much work! They are taking advantage of their staff but they are not alone in the retail business. I also believe Tesco take advantage of their customers- my local has very poor quality food, not very fresh and terrible customer service. |

As a socialist I have a problem with that, but if you're going to object to it it has to be a more wide-ranging political objection - ie you can't just have a problem with Tescos. If you believe in an unhindered free market and unrestricted capitalism you have to let them pay whatever they want. |

All companies have to exploit somebody or other if driven by the profit motive, whether it's the producers and growers, staff or Evan the shoppers themselves. Like any commercial company i'd prefer that more of that money was ploughed back in to giving staff, the public and the area around these places a bit of a better deal rather than straight into the pockets of shareholders or overpaid ceo's. The question always arises if a company has an undue monopoly whether it's Tesco leveraging the growers & produces or microsoft exploiting a virtual monopoly with possible unfair working practices.I would hope that a successful company would wish to share some of its success with its staff and reward loyalty and not gain commercial advantage by paying subsitence wages or through bad working conditions, |

i think tescos is a real crap place to work. my boyfriend works there and in the first year he had 3 weeks off on seperate times because of injuries that he ended up in hospital with, even when he went back to work with a doctors note they still gave him warnings and he is on a final warning now just for getting ill or injured!!! they r a bunch of wankers. if he wants overtime they wont give it to him and when he doesnt they maon at him for not doing the extra hours they give him! arseholes!!! wilkinson is soooo much better :D. |
