The banks are ripping us off?
i set up direct debit and was not told that if their was no money in my account that, the bank would take 30 pounds off for each bill anyway £600 has gone out of my account this year and naive as i am, i though the bank was taking it to pay the bill. anyway, they were taking it for themselves.
My friends said on trevor mcdonald tonight programme he was saying about how the banks are overcharging and people can get their money bank, the man in the bank told me to write to them, and i might get money back, does anyone know about this any advice?

Basically banks, building societies are only allowed to charge the cost of administrating the account.

Technicially there not allowed to profit from it, if you want your money back heres the short step-by-step guide for getting your cash back from the greedy banks.
1) Gather all your statements with details of the charges and send a letter with a copy of the statements to the bank requesting a immediate refund of these charges within 14 days of the date of the letter and that they should consider themselves on notice of intention to be brought before the courts. Best to send the letter recorded delivery for future reference. Also take a copy of the letter with copies of the statement to your local branch and request a handwritten acknowledgement.
2) Wait 13 days, contact them and ask if they have refunded all your money, (which they probably havent), dont accept any meagre amount in a out of court settlement, stick to your guns, while your there or speaking to them ask them if they wish to nominate solicitors to accept service, this will make them realise you mean business.
3) Day 14 goto your local small claims court and present details of your claim and pay the necessary fee depending on how much you are claiming, this will vary.
4) Keep a copy of the court sealed claim form for your own reference. Send the original to the regisitered office of your bank and building society by recorded delivery. Take a copy with a letter saying that you have issued to your local branch.
5) From what I have read, banks and building societies rarely put up a defence, why should they, there busy ripping off customers elsewhere, so all you need to do is attend court on the day, explain that your claiming back unfair charges and you should be awarded your claim and costs in full.
6) Go get your money back, remember you now have a court sealed judgement confirming that this money is now owed to you.
Make a pain of yourself at the local branch, threaten bailiffs, debt collectors and the like. Branch managers dont like being embarrased in front of there customers so make the most of it, even go as far as taping a copy of the court judgment to the door of the branch, revenge is sweet!

Hope this helps.

In the states, we have both banks and credit unions, which are banks that you can "join" if you fit a certain criterium. A "teachers' credit union" or "police employees credit union." Maybe you could join a credit union and avoid such further mess.

Best of everything!

type "unfair bank charges" into your search engine and you should get a list of sites willing to give advice on claiming back these charges... i am currently in the process of claiming £1750 back from a 2 year period.
