mjk6886@yahoo.com | The big three union says that the union will not make any more concessions.? |
how ignorant is this statement.lets see your company is on the verge of going bankrupt.the average blue collar worker makes in the neighborhood of 28.00 per hour, pay not a penny for health care ie;no co-pay no deductible.bankers holidays off(they are not bankers).if laid off they get almost all of their original pay, employee discounts.full optical, full dental insurance again not a penny out of pocket.what am i missing??this is why automobiles cost so much for the average person to buy.i say let the big three auto makers go into bankruptcyy and get rid of the unions and give the jobs to people who want to work for a fair wage, not the inflated wages and egos of the union workers.i want to know who agrees with this idea |

I agree with your basic theory MJK but also agree with Toledo's comments. Years ago the unions were needed for fair wages, benefits, standing up for employee rights but times have changed.
I've known many people that worked for a union company that went to a non-union company (Auto & Paper company) and they like the non-union better. The pay and benefits are comparable and they say the only difference is that a sluff employee that good workers have to cover for will be canned instead of protected by the unions.
Toyota & Honda are making money with NEW non-union plants where GM just shut down because they couldn't (Georgia) . . that says alot.
I think I would ditch the unions to keep the company afloat because they are making a huge arrogant mistake, the fatcats should take a huge pay cut (making millions as they tank a company is a crime), the Government should give them low interest loans (not really a Bailout is it?) and EVERYONE should try to buy american autos to keep their neighbors, brothers, sisters, moms, dads, and kids employed. Sure there are foreign owned factories here that provide jobs but, they sure don't inject their profits here in the USA creating a stronger economy/spinoffs.

You bring up some excellent points. I can't help but think that if they won't give any concessions, they won't have jobs period, because there won't be a company left. |

I'm always amazed by these uneducated idiots thinking they deserve high rages for a low skilled job. The reason so many people are upset with the unions is this. The unions would rather put all of their members out of work for good to prove a point.
Honda, Toyota, BMW and Mercedes are putting out a superior product and not being ruled by the unions. If the unions continue on this course their members will all be bagging groceries or working at fast food establishments. |

Unions were designed to protect workers in a time when abuses were common in companies. Those days are gone. Unions today still protect workers but they also strangle companies and force them to pay unrealistic amounts to their employees.
The bail out that has been proposed for the auto industry will not solve any thing. As long as unions prevent the big 3 from being competitive they will continue to fail. If they go out of business it could be as many as 1,000,000 people who would lose their jobs.
If they go into bankruptcy reorganization, most of the jobs would be saved and the companies would be able to compete with other car makers. Of course salaries would be less for the workers but is $150,000 - $180,000 (pay + benefits) really realistic fo an assembly line worker.
I say let them go into bankruptcy. |

Wait a minute, you are incorrect and should check your facts before spouting off!
We have taken a pay cut in 2007.We do have a deductible on our health care and the UAW is taking over the health care in 2010.We also have been paying into this fund since 2007.Full optical and dental?I don't think so.Bankers holidays?Sorry but no again.
Tell me what I should make?Have you ever worked on the assembly line?
Why is it OK for someone to make more then me and do less work then me?
How much do you make?Is it too much? |

I know. I almost dropped my martini when I saw the headline. So it's better to bankrupt your employer, lose millions of jobs and destroy an American industry than to get a few bucks an hour less and maybe pay some co-pay on your health plan. OK. Go ahead then. I've driven GM's for some time now but I had 2 Toyotas and well, honestly, they were great trucks. So, when my S-10 blows I guess I'll be in a Tacoma or Tundra..... |
