USA is one of the largest oil producer in world?
Why does the oil companys raise there price for us as soon as they buy it. The gas your buying now was bought months ago for less. Why do they sell there oil and buy overseas if not for the profit, there passing on the cost to us for that oil they buy but nothing from sales.

You said the right word Profit! Money Money Money.

I don't know for fact that we are the largest oil producer, but I do know for fact we are the largest oil consumer in the world. And that the price we pay for a gallon here is comparable to the price of a liter in europe. I believe the math is something like 3.8 liters to the gallon but I too lazy to verify the number, Its close enough.

Yes the USA does produce a lot of oil. You may have heard of the Alaska oil pipeline, and the Exonn-Valdez disaster, or of various Texas oil tycoons like the Bush family.
Various places, like Alaska, California, Oklahoma, Texas, Florida (coastal waters) have oil, which is why we are a big oil producer.

You are correct that the oil companies raise the price of a certain batch of oil after it has been completed and all production costs have been incurred.

They do this when something happens like a terrorist attack on oil pipelines. Events like these shorten the supply of oil. But all the countries demand just as much oil, so when there is not enough for everybody they all start bidding against each other for it. This drives up the price, even though the oil on hand did not cost more to make.

You are also correct in noting that the price goes up well in advance before the shortage hits the market. Oil companies do this because they can.

The fact that oil is ordered in advance contributes to the shortage affect to. They dont stock up on oil and then wait to sell it. Someone has placed an order on it as it leaves the pump.

Put simply it is two factors.
1) supply and demand-- right after a terrorist attack or something that hampens oil production, the gas they are selling you at the pump can be sold elsewhere.

2) They can. There are a few companies/ organizations/cartels that own nearly all the oil in the world and with that type of oligopoly (near monopoly) power there is not much anyone can do if the dont like it.
