Unhappy with my pay raise?
I started to work as an AR Analyst in Dec of 2006. In the time I've been with the company I have taken a lot more resposibilities and have even done things for other departments when asked by the VP's. Today I receive my pay raise of 3.5%. I was very upset because like mentioned before I have always said yes to all the VP's request. I received a 4 on my evaluation and I believe I should get the max. of 5%. How should I approch this?

Anyone getting a raise should be overjoyed. many people are losing their jobs.
try looking for another with the same responsibilities and more money.

I've written dozens of evaluations and given dozens of raises. Sometimes the amounts are the result of what upper management states as the ceiling for raises that year. Times are tight in many industries.
Now, the way to approach a raise for next time, or a reconsideration for this time is to ask you supervisor what you can do to achieve that extra 1.5%. Do with with sincerity and humility. You are honestly wanting to know what it takes to get 5% instead of 3.5%. I've done this with teachers and grades in the distant past. Often times they will think on it and decide that I indeed deserved an A for the class. Sometimes when giving out raises management forgets all the little, and big, things some associates do that is extra. By asking what other things you could do in the future you get them asking themselves why didn't I give this guy 5%. Try this before demanding extra. You may not realize what some others have done to get that extra. It might be more than you ever thought. If so, then you will look rather foolish. If they can't name extra stuff then you are much closer to getting that raise next time. Also, you cement in their minds you are a company associate willing to go all out.

No one in our company has got a raise in the last 3 years. Company profits too tight.

The days of nice raises is over in the USA I think

Be glad if you get any raise

I'd say suck it up! if your really dissatisfied start looking for a new job. If you don't have a guarenteed pay scale raise then you get what you get. Any complaining about it will put you on the skyline in a negative way. Just secure a new job before you leave this one. If you like the work you are doing I wouldn't be too upset about an average raise.
do you want them scrutinizing you for everything like watching when you come and go, or how long you take for lunch or if you are checking your personal email on the clock. Those are the things that they look at if you get labeled a complainer.
Plus 4% is decent.

Tell your boss that you are happy with what they've given you but you feel that for the work your doing you feel you deserve a bit more then that. Be nice, be polite. Back up your reasoning..and if you get declined be polite.

A lot of people are going to be disappointed in their raises this year or lack of. My husband didn't get one this year because of the economy.

Take your concerns to the person who gave you your review. Tell them you think you deserve a larger raise and have a list ready so you are prepared for giving a reason "why" you deserve a bigger raise. You may get it! If not, ask what contributions you can make to the company in the next year so you can earn a bigger raise next year.

You never know unless you ask. Go in with a good attitude regardless of how it comes out. A lot of companies are in a crunch with the gas prices the way they are. If affects every aspect of our lives.

If you are unhappy with your raise go to the source. Tell your boss you are unhappy with it and what you need to do to get a 5%.

You need to find a nother job you are to valueable for this company to take advantage of you in that manner good luck pray you know god really does answer prayers try it.

tell them that you have compared your pay rate to other companys and you feel you are being short handed and that you can go to another place to make more. tell them you dont want to quit but you want to be making what you should be getting.

A 3.5% raise in the course of 2 years? As a professional, that's less than average. Consider that many people get that much each year just for staying around. 5% is okay but still not great.

My recommendation as a manager is to be tactful but honest. Approach your boss alone and when he/she has time to talk.

Ask the boss what he expects in performance and results for a significant raise.

Remember that just saying "Yes" doesn't mean you're good at your job. It just means that you will work when asked to.
I would explain that "I fail to see how my performance falls short of these expectations."

Ultimately, if nothing changes, you can make 1 of 2 decisions, stay and deal with the fact that life is unfair, or leave and pursue greener pastures. Good luck and remember this experience when you're on the other side of the desk.
