Wow! I worship Walmart. It sells you stuff for so cheap that you don't really care that the workers in China make 3 dollars a day after 14 hours of work. You also don't care if they hire illegal immigrants so that they can exploit them, don't allow unions, give you no health care plan.

It's where I sell my conscience to buy goods that I don't really need in the first place.

But hey! They changed the rules of the game. (Just like Hitler did.) They're worshipped by the majority of the people. (Just like Hitler did!)

If it's good for the people of one country it doesn't really matter right?

(Just like Hitler said.)

Right.

Here allow me to address the "workers are NOT captives" defense, which makes just a little bit more sense then "Chewbecca defense" which makes none.

Workers of course are not captives. And that's what we're made to believe in a "free market" country. However keep these in consideration: 75 percent of Us workforce works in service. And these "workers" hardly do find other business to work in at the expense of walmart, who effectively kills the local business. So where do you suggest they work?

Moreover, all the other business around are based on the now worshipped Wal*Mart model, so the worker mobility doesn't really have better places to go. And also do not forget that they are disorganized individuals who are struggling to survive *even* when they're working.

So all the Sherlocks out there, the workers ARE captives to the capital in a free market country, and they have to sell their labor to the price that is not anywhere near sufficient for them.

And oh yes, Wal*Mart gets all kinds of government sponsorship, subsidaries and even enrolls its own "associates" to government programmes.

And yes, this is a free market country. That is: the capital which rules the market is free of any obligations to others, and then again it requires some obligations unto itself and gets some.

I'm all for saving money. They contributed quite a bit to the Gulf Coast.

Walmart exercises the freedom to conduct business in a free market. The only way they can hire people at low wages...is because people are willing to work for them. As a country, if we begin legislating how businesses pay their employees, not one of us will be able to afford a thing. Those employees are NOT captives. If they have talent and want to, they can change jobs. If they don't have the skills to leave WalMart, they should be thankful to be employed.

Wal*Mart is regarded with an almost religious reverence here at the Truman University School of Business. Its a masterpiece of technology, logistics, planning and capitalist thought. They've taken Firm Theory and completely rewritten it. A corporation which truly exists on a global plane and a quintessential rags-to-riches story. It is, indeed, a masterwork. Bravo.

WalMart has quickly made a clear example of what happens when we expect someone else to live our lives for us and when we want to avoid the 'hard' parts of life. (want a new radio, don't want to save up for a decent one? Just pop into WalMart for a super cheap one and keep on entertaining yourself into unconsciousness) Want some cheap food, but don't want to grow it yourself? WalMart will 'negotiate' the best price from the farmer for you, and when they change suppliers in midseason, leave the farmer with fields full of fruit, or even better, not pay the farmer because one tomato out of a million is bruised. (But they will still sell it to YOU).
Yes, almost all of us have to shop at WalMart if we want to be active members of our society, because in many cases, our society is now determining what it needs by what is available at WalMart.
Buy less, buy local, make it yourself. Your dollars are your life, keep them to yourself as much as you can.
