The small local businesses in your vacinity will struggle to exist.this knock on effect has dire consequences .Whilst I lived in the states I purchased an American shirt. When I got home it said on the label Made in China?.I know with out adoubt that Americans are quite capable of producing good products but will find it hard to compete with the cheap and nasty products made else where. What bugs me is how can a product that has to travel half way round the world be cheaper. It does not make sense?.The positive side of Wal Mart is the variety and price. But the down side is it does not help the USA.Foreign manufacturers have taken over lots of markets. |

LOL... I can't believe someone on here doesn't know who Sam Walton is. haha
Anyway how about the way Wal-Mart has put the little mom and pop stores out of business by moving into small towns. And how their is only 3 registers open when you go to check out when their are 30 registers not being used. That really ticks me off. |

They drive local small businesses out of business.
They lower wages.
They resist unions.
They import almost all of their goods from Communist China, which helps put the average working man in this country out of a job.
They employ illegal immigrants.
They don't promote women into management.
They don't pay overtime.
They have closed stores which have voted successfully to unionize.
Avoid them every chance you get, as if YOUR job depended upon it.
As far as what kind of man Sam Walton may have been; it is only apparent that he was more concerned about his bottom line than the welfare of his countrymen. |

They do not always have the lowest prices. As a matter of fact after all the other competitors have gone out of business their prices go up.
Lower the average wage in local markets.
Develop land that used to be for farming or were simply just beautiful being undeveloped and replace it with a giant asphalt parking lot with vey little in number of trees and a huge building.
They sell products made overseas at the expense of America laborers.
I never knew Sam Walton (I hear he had a good heart) but his kids are greedy.
They've already over saturated the market with stores worldwide. Their stocks price is going nowhere. |

Walmart is a community killer and small mom and pop business killer. They make deals not to pay property taxes with communities for so many years and when it is time to pay taxes they close the store and build a new one in another area. So the school districts and the cities never reap a dime of property tax money from the store. Look around and see how many have closed and moved to another taxing jurisdiction. Look into the thirty lawsuits in discrimination of women. Not one thing in that store is made in the USA. When Sam Walton was alive there was. |

I suppose I should not be surprised at how many people actually SUPPORT walmart, because the US is known for the "ignorance is bliss" theory.
I'm not American bashing here... we have walmarts in Canada as well, and there are plenty of people here who shop at walmart.
But the fact of the matter can't be denied... people are too caught up in their own lives to take an interest in others. Unless those others are celebrities.
If people took a few minutes to actually look into what kind of things walmart does, maybe they'd be willing to go a little bit further and pay a little bit more to NOT assist destroying the economy.
For those that say they can't afford to shop elsewhere:
I am a single parent, and I don't make a lot of money. I have big mortgage payments and get no child support.
I have not shopped at walmart for 2 years, and I am not suffering for it.
I would suffer a lot more if I did shop there - my conscience and morals are a lot more important to me than a few bucks.

Wal Mart is one of the most stressful places you can be. Crowds, not enough cashiers, shoddy merchandise, rude people. I always have to de-stress after a trip. I don't enjoy it at all. |

I have asthma and bronchitis. Ten minutes in wal mart and I am ready for 911. The heavy odor of all that new and cheap plastic. It is a major pollutant for everyone, not just those who have respiratory problems.
It is also a very stressful place. I would rather pay more and go elsewhere. Place is a nightmare. |

I have commited to not shopping in Wal-Mart. Sometimes it is inevitable but I try. They are known for shutting down small business and importing the majority of their products. PBS has had multiple broadcasts breaking down everything you need to know about Wal-Mart. Included was a show about a little town in the midwest where Wal-Mart wanted to open a store but the town didn't want it so there was a big battle over it. It was pretty interesting... look it up.
Yes I agree that it is good for jobs and tax revenue. For instance the little town I grew up in in Alabama just got one which means millions of dollars that will go to the city so they can finally have a police department and really improve the city. I am glad the money is going to that town instead of the monster city down the road where we receive none of the benifets from the taxes we pay. However since it has opened up (one year ago) three "mom and pop shops" have closed a family owned grocery store, pharmacy and hardware store. We live in a free society that encourages buisness to grow but I believe they have gove to far. I do not like to shop there because everything is emported and its a huge hastle. All my groceries come from Publix a smaller company owned and ran out of Florida. The service and products are better but you pay for it which is fine by me.
I understand people shopping there especially to save money for you family but I choose not to. |

i work for walmart. i have for over three years. i am very happy with my job. i am pleased with the regular pay raises i have recieved and i am able to be the sole provider of a family of four. i do not like the fact that several of our items have been recalled. i do not like the fact that the toys we are selling that are recalled are "made in china". seems to me that they should test the products before we put them on the shelf, not come out with these recalls after several customers have already made the purchases and then have to return them. my child was very disappointed that she can't have aquadots for christmas for instance.
i do really enjoy my job though...and it gets old hearing nothing but negative media about them. sure they aren't perfect but tell me a cooperation that is! they are in it to make a dollar just like the next one. |

I love the convenience and low prices of Wal-Mart. I can go shopping for groceries and close to anything else I may need all in the same trip. I even had my oil changed at Wal-Mart today. If you want to know a negative thing about Wal-Mart, some people say it is becoming a monopoly. |

Well you're not going to find any more negative stuff about wal-mart than you will any other major corporation. Wal-Mart is good for the economy in many aspects. It creates many well paying jobs, and it offers low pricing. Yes they had some law suites a while back ago in regards to employment issues, but they've fixed that. |
