Wal-Mart: Love it or Hate it?
Just saw Greenwald's documentary on it, and wondered what my fellow Answerers thought. I loved the issues revealed, but thought the actual filmmaking was amateurish. *shrug*

Since no one's seen the doc, here's a brief summary: Walmart receives millions in subsidies from state governments around the US, that we the taxpayers unknowingly fund.

They push out mom and pops wherever they go.

Mistreat their workers, especially women, through unaffordable healthcare and denying overtime pay. Walmart is currently being sued in class actions across the country.

Oh yah, lots of products are imported from China (sweatshops is what I gathered, from the documentary.) Not to many products made in America.

I've seen the documentary.

It's tough.

The philanthropic 'bastion of social justice' part of me considers the global issues directly brought on by Wal-Mart that stare blind America in the face and want to simultaneously weep, scream, and kick that kind of unchecked and downright inhumane Capitalism in the neck. (I'm not knocking Capitalism, it's the whole Fair Trade vs. [better than and preferable to] Free Trade issue I'm raising, which is another conversation) The fact that the heirs to the Wal-Mart fortune have a net worth higher than that of Bill Gates due to their multinational corporate abuse of economically struggling countries makes me ill on a good day.

But, conversely, Wal-Mart provides a much needed service to lower and middle class Americans. Many of us simply cannot afford to pay more than 16.99 for a pair of jeans or buy food that doesn't come in bulk. Friends of mine have said that it comes down to the ethical problem of who we're in greater obligation to, our neighbor next door or our neighbor overseas. Should we suck up the international injustices brought on by Wal-Mart because we can't personally afford not to shop there, or should we ignore our middle class neighbors in favor of a more internationally considerate altruism?

I don't shop there because personally I'm oppsed to what it stands for as a corporation and economically I'm lucky enough not to have to. If however, I was less financially independent, who knows. Calling it a catch 22 would be an understatement.

Hate it. I haven't seen the documentary, but if from what you're saying it's saying is true, then we really pay more than we think when we buy their products. We pay for the huge subsidies you mentioned.
That doesn't sound like a good deal at all!

Been in one of their stores just twice.

Enough to make me vomit.

All that crap scattered around with cheap, rounded off prices on big boxed items that are making people fat and sloppy looking all the time.

Low wages devalues the work ethic.

Hate it and what Sam Walton did to struggling little businesses.

Won't being going back.

What, are we comparing Wal-Mart to the Roman Empire? All major corporations have their rises and their falls...

I personally am for Wal-Mart.

They represent the very cornerstone of economic growth and competition in the United States. All in all, having a large company tends to encourage better goods and more competition for everyone in the retail business.

As a member of the growing population of Americans that are not economically gifted, so to speak, I applaud a store that enables me to buy things I normally would not be able to afford. Yes, most of the products are not made in the United States, but when it comes right down to needing things like clothes, food, etc, you don't care.

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to be able to afford United States merchandise, but it is just too expensive. If you make enough money to afford better merchandise, go for it, but for the fast growing middle and lower classes of America, we need a break. And since the government feels the need not to raise minimum wadges or do anything to help the blue collar hard worker, we will take any break we can.

Love it or not, it's needed.

hate it..always smells like fart in there.

The reality of Wal-Mart falls somewhere betwixt and between the documentary by Greewald and the "home grown, corn fed" crap Wal-Mart puts out in its' ad campaigns.
And, in fact, Target is as big, if not worse, offender when it comes to impacting negatively on the 'little guy'. They regularly seek out, or commission, the production of 'artsy' items by workers in third world countries that replicate popular craft items otherwise only available from the skilled, usually juried, American craftsmen and women who originated the item(s).
I live in a fast growing area with a fairly high median income. Wal-Mart came here a few years ago, with little pubic protest, and has had almost no effect on other businesses. In fact the only business known to have sufferred is K-Mart, located directly across the street from our mega Wal-Mart. I have a hard time working up any real sympathy for K-Mart. Fewer Martha items in the world is 'okay' with me!
I am not attempting to defend Wal-Mart, or its' ugly practices. I do, however, believe that the truth is not quite as clean and clearly defined as the documentary paints...
Personally, I shop there as infrequently as possible as I seem to have some sort of sensory explosion followed by an awful anxiety attack almost everytime I go in the place. It is just too much, all at once, for me......
It does allow folks who might not otherwise be able to afford many of the little luxuries of life, an avenue to purchase things at a marked cost reduction over the smaller enterprises. Their groceries are also considerably cheaper, again, allowing for some spare dollars to then be able to purchase that one, otherwise unaffordable, item from the "mom and pop" outfit....
I have to applaud the earlier poster who so clearly describes the dilemma of conscience over next door or far away... It's a difficult choice....but, as the other poster conveyed, a "no-brainer" for most.....
Just my few thoughts...none giving a clear response to your query....*smile*
