Yes they do. Food stuffs and books esp. Ive seen so many cartloads of books tossed in the trash its unreal. Some things they decide not to send back to the distributor so they toss it in the garbage. |

I doubt they throw away anything, they just keep marking it down as it will always sell just at what price is the question |

actually I heard that was true, I was walking through the isle not that long ago and someone was saying that to me, you better pick what you like now, because all of this Clarence stuff wont be here tomorrow. I didn't know how to take it and I didn't question it but I know now that is what they did. but I bet the employees took a ton of stuff. |

No and yes. All stores will inevitably destroy clearance items they can't return. I mean, if you mark something down to a dollar and it still doesn't sell, then get rid of it to make room for other clearance merchandise that you aren't losing as much money on.
That particular store might go through their clearance isle every week at that time, but there's no company direction for it. Other stores follow their own routine, since markdown budgets vary by store. |

i doubt it is a set time, but it is illegal to go thropugh dumpster on a store property, you can't have that stuff even though it is perfectly good. i work at a walgreens (relocated one) and a few months after we opened at out new location we had to install a lock on the dumpster, people were always digging in it (most was returned merchandise that was already broken.)
the main reason is people dig up receipts to try to return items that they just take offthe shelf or they try to return the thrown out merchandise itself.
we donate all food goods to the food shelf. |

all stores do this.
at various times.
so go dumpster diving you'll find other very classy (not sarcastic) people do. its a great way to save money and the environment. |

I believe it. I've heard that they (their sister company, Sam's Club) also destroys day old bread and stuff close to code date expiration so they don't have people digging it out of their dumpsters or have people asking for donations. They're only a multi billion $ company!!! They can't afford to loose it!! |

I work at Sainsbury's (Large British supermarket) and the manager throws out a LOT of unsold items which were reduced (clearenced) in the evening - so there's no reason why Wal Mart isn't the same I'd guess.. |

Like many stores, walmart may donate the dregs of their unsold stuff to charity and non-profit thrift stores in exchange for the tax write off. They likely make more on the items than if they'd sold for the clearance price. |

Yes...they are called "Buy-backs"...and the freight to send them back is more than they are worth...so they are REQUIRED to destroy.
Seems like such a waste, huh?
I say give this stuff to Salvation Army..or Goodwill. |

wal mart sends things back to distributors or donates to charity they don't throw anything away. |

when I worked at a food store, we always throw away expired bread store brand bread, doughnuts, bagels fruit (like banannas that have some brown on them!) store brand damaged stuff, etc into a trash compactor so there is no chance of recovery.
However if its a vendor item, we would send it back for partial credit (Reclamation). |
