jamesfentress44 | Wal-Mart dropping the Lay Away service..did it hurt buyers with limited income? |

It hurt people with limited income hardly....Especially when they did it before Christmas here in my town, parents started putting things in law away knowing that if it says there they can pay on it, and secondly the kids can't find it in the house..Along with school supplies a lot of parents go and put things in layaway and don't get it out till right before school starts. People that have limited funds used it to help purchase something that is needed but can't afford to jump right in and buy it. Yes it might of tied things up but remember some places the deposit you put down on a product in layaway if you don't get it, they keep! So they make a few extra dollars even though the product is still sitting there, and might be outdated. |

It may change the buying habits of certain people, but in all honesty, I don't believe it will hurt them. The prices are already below competition in most cases for general merchandise and historically, most people put clothes on layaway. For clothing, markdowns are slated for those items from the time their UPC is created and entered into the system. Not all markdown schedules are the same....but nevertheless, they will be marked down. So, in effect, they would be paying more for it by leaving it in layaway. Of course, this wouldn't happen--they would be forced to continually lower the price in layaway. So, no- I think it will have little effect. |

maybe but it also really ties up the resources of a company to put stock on layaway and then have it not redeemed. Then by the time you are sure the party is not going to pick up their merchandise the item is old stock and just has to go on sale. |

So many people have and use credit cards, I think it had a minimal impact on people. |

it may affect the sales some, but like a drop in a 55 gallon barrel. Most people will still buy whatever it was they had on layaway. But the store will not have to hire people to take care of layaway, and they can free up valuable storage area for other items, so the net will be higher profits. |
