Ya post more than once, I'll answer it more than once since it's a very good topic. :)
Wal-Mart has figured out how to make a buck off of poverty. While our government has made it easier for companies to import, the American Consumer is what makes it possible. When people look on the shelves at Wal-Mart they see a low price tag, but they don't see the TRUE cost of the item.
Wal-Mart & Welfare:
2002 Georgia - 1/4 of employees qualified to enroll their children in Medicaid
2004 California - taxpayers foot the bill ($86 million) to subsidize Wal-Mart employee families.
2004 Penn State study showed an increase in poverty rates with the increase in the number of Wal-Mart stores.
Wages - high turnover, about 70% leave within the first year stating low wage and lack of recognition. They pay less than other stores for the SAME job. In 2001, average supermarket employee earned $10.35 per hour while a Wal-Mart store clerk earned $8.23 per hour. Quote from Sam Walton "I pay low wages. I can take advantage of that. We're going to be successful, but the basis is a very low-wage, low-benefit model of employment." ~ Wiki
Imports: "By 2005, about 60% of Wal-Mart's merchandise was imported, compared to 6% in 1995." ~Wiki
Health Insurance problems, poor working conditions, child labor violations, undocumented workers (ie illegal Aliens), Discrimination, and on and on and on. Not to mention, trying to Unionize will get you fired (yes, that too is illegal).
While Wal-Mart has launched a wonderful little public relations campaign, I don't see where they are actually doing something about the underlaying problems. The only times they have done anything is when they are forced to by the courts. Wal-Mart's ad campaign brags about the health coverage for their employees, what they don't mention is the % of employees that are being covered by the taxpayers.
If American Consumers were a little more concerned about where they spend their hard earned dollar, maybe that would send a message to ALL of those companies that exploit their employees and profit off of exporting American Jobs. Don't rely on our Government to do the right thing, and certainly don't rely on Big Business. Make your voice heard by where you spend your money! |

Some of Wal-Marts business practices are not ethical or in the best interests of the consumer or employees. It is the right of a company to earn the greatest revenue, or as they say in investment circles, maximize shareholders wealth, but a business/corporation should also be a responsible member of their community and help to make their community better. This is where WalMart seems to be lacking.
The PBS show Frontline did a really good program on Walmart and if it was good for America. While I assumed PBS would find things wrong with WalMart, it was interesting. They forced Rubber Maid to lay off thousands of employees, a television manufacturer in Tennessee (I think) to go out of business and close its factory, and their marketing practice of the low price point is almost a bait and switch tactic. The web site is below:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/...
Also, WalMart has been repeatedly sued and found guilty of making employees work off the clock and not paying overtime. That is not right for any business and I cannot think of any employee who enjoys not being paid for their work. That is simple fairness.

Lastly, the whole issue of health insurance. I know that health insurance is a benefit that is offered as part of the entire employee compensation. However there have been reports and testimony in the Maryland senate that WalMart encourages their employees to sign up for state health insurance and pays the least of its overall revenues towards employee health care.
Once again, their is a difference between an admired company that is profitable and helps better their employees and community and a greedy company that sucks the value and resources out of their employees and communities and leaves nothing of value when they are done. |

RE: "they look at the low price, but they don't see the TRUE cost of the item."
The people who NEED that low price to live--aren't really worried about the TRUE cost. I am so sick and tired of the people preaching about how they support the local merchants even if they cost a little more--they boycott Walmart and shop elsewhere. Fine---shop where ever you want. If you have the money to shop at more expensive places, go right ahead. Quit badmouthing the people who don't have the money to do that. |
