Walgreens employees over worked?
I normaly go into several walgreens around the country when i travel on business and i see people there are over worked. I see the photo specialists, taking passport pictures, deveolping film, stocking shelves, opening the bathrooms with codes for shoppers, cashiers expected to stock shelves and run to counters when customers are there, managers answering all sorts of questions from customers, never taking breaks and all that.
Ive always wondered why they dont hire more workers. Silly its the profits i know, but this is slavery in a new dimension. My idea is that people should probably go back to school so they dont have to do this.Walgreens is good for teenagers, but anyone over 21 still working as a cashier full time and not in school isnt really thinking about going far.

I totally agree with you cause I happen to be one of the ones who hates walgreens they have the worst employees and managers . some of these ppl I think like acting stupid for one reason or another . good luck .

The people that work there choose to work for walgreens they dont have to work there. any job u have is going to require u to do so many duties like stocking selfs helping customers and things like that. It's not just walgreens other places are like that as well. look at CVS they have one person doing the photo lap and cashier. to me that would be considered over working. but walgreens have different people for different departments like photo pharmacy and cosmetics. it may look like there busy with soo many things but there not. i'm a beauty advisor for walgreens and most of the time i'm just standing there bored out of my mind so does the cashier were always looking for things to do to make time go by fast. if ur going to accuse someone of turning there employees into slaves get feed back from those employees first.and i do make good money there i make 9:75 an hour and have only been there a year. and we do get three breaks a day.

Yes, you used the new catchword of the week: slavery. Unfortunately, not one of those people has to be there, they applied for and were accepted to work there. And dont give me this mumbo jumbo about where else are they going to work, work is work. Money is money. You work whereever you spend your day and you spend your day whereever you work.

Its not that they don't hire people, its the fact they have a really high turn over rate. Its not hiring people thats the problem, its keeping them. Yeah but to answer another part of your question. The ones in my area only pay 6.75 an hour and employees are generally cross trained in everything...(except pharmacy cause thats a seperate thing). Plus employees have to stock and clean the store at night...which is alot to do on a 6.75 budget.

I agree that Walgreens employees are overworked, but that is pretty common in America in general and especially in retail. Every company / corporation is trying to reduce staff as much as possible and increasing the workload on every employee as much as possible, but it's not slavery.

Every employee in America has the option to quit at any time, and if these employees hated it so much they would go somewhere else. Quite a few employers don't seem to realize that by saving a few dollars in pay they are costing them hundreds of dollars when employees simply don't care, don't give them that extra effort, or carry the attitude over to customers. Unfortunately, especially with the decline of unionization in America, this isn't going to change much anytime soon. Corporations don't answer to anyone except their board and major investors - who only care about wringing out every bit of profit they can. A cashier waiting at a register for customers instead of stocking or doing something else is inefficient and lost profit in their minds.

Keep in mind though that many of the people who work these jobs don't really NEED them. I've known several people who worked in crappy retail jobs to supplement their normal income. They could get by with the money they make from their main job, but have extra time and figured that an extra $100 or so a week is worth a few afternoons of their time. There are also quite a few retired people who work these jobs to supplement their pension.

Other people work these jobs to get through school, while they are starting their career, or to get buy until they figure out what they are going to do. These jobs aren't great, but there is a good chance that if you work hard you will be promoted to management within a few years and actually have a halfway decent job. Even if you don't intend to work as a retail manager, if you are going to school while you work it looks pretty good on a resume to show you have management experience.

On top of that, a job in retail is nice because it's easy to get hired, and it's easy to quit and walk away from when you are tired of it. Employers like part-time employees because they don't have to worry about benefits, and they never need to worry about overtime. As long as there are people who want to make that extra money and will work like this, there will always be employers who, like Walgreens, overwork their employees.

I have to agree. Walgreens overworks its employees, and its nothing but neo slavery and colonialisim. My whole office infact stopped shopping at walgreens after we realised how much the poor guys there are over worked.
How is one supposed to stock and attend to the register at the same time? Then i think they get 30 minutes break to eat quickly and return to work.
No one over 21 should be working there if they are not in school i agree. What are you expecting, to make cashier of beauty whatever or photoperson a cereer? Thats laziness if you are not going to school and people need to wake up. This companies just suck the blood out of you. Then every year after you have slaved for Walgreens stocking and whatever else, you get a bonus of 25 cents which is about $1.75 extra each day minus tax thats a whopping enourmous $1.30 bonus each day. Or about $13 extra a paycheck. That $13 will buy you milk and bread and eggs and juice and its gone. And it surprises me to see people earning 7 dollars an hour excited about a 25 cent raise. I mean is this a joke or what? Older retired folks can work there, so can school teens, and mangers too, but no one over 18 and not going ot college should work there full time. Thats a lazy mind an dyou see people who have been there 2 - 3 years and not in management positions and not going to school. Im like " what are you expecting out of life"? you cant be really thinking far and you will never amount to anything.
Walgreens is notorious for overworking employees and ive heard this with several people. Its nothing but slavery. How does one stock shelves, run to registers all over the store an dthen get a 30 minute break to eat and then return to work? If this is not slavery i dont know what is.
But as for me and our office and families we stopped shopping there a long time ago. More people need to know about this neo colonialisim and boycott this stores. Its a shame in America in 2007.

I'm an employee of walgreens for almost eight years now&yes sometimes we are overworked but so are lots of other people in different work places...to aalyah r how dare you call me&anyone else who's worked here for a significant amount of time lazy. FYI I am a writer who has written a book&4 movie scripts because that's what I do...unfortunately it's very hard to break into that career. I get up early every morning to send my 9&10 year old daughters to school, then come home to my 3 month old son before going to work so before you go calling anybody lazy, how about you know the facts of these workers lives...I hate that I found this site so late because I would've loved to give you a life lesson way back when...lucky...
