oxmla | Walmart. I have met people that do not like to shop at Walmart.? |
They say that Walmart exploits people in other countries. Is Walmart the only corporation that uses cheap labor? And should i shop there knowing how they mistreat poor people? |

I know about this, but not to the extent that actually goes on. I only go there because I am efficient and I don't want to go everywhere and take all day to buy what I need. I can go there and get groceries and seasonal and general merchandise, all in one trip, in about 30 minutes of shopping, where if I went around town to buy all of the same things at separate stores, it may take all day!! |

I shop at Walmart only on very rare occasion. And only then because I can't find what I'm looking for elsewhere in town and it's not the kind of thing I can order online.
I don't do it so much for the exploitation angle (although I think there's a lot of that going on, I don't think it's any different from most large companies in that respect); I do it because I hate how they come into town and close down all the competition then start jacking up their prices. So, I do my best to make sure they'll always have competition. Since competition is the life-blood of capitalism, I think that's a healthy thing.
And yes, I'm willing to pay more for it somewhere else if that's what it takes. The only reason Walmart can offer the prices they do is because they squeeze their suppliers to sell them goods below cost. (Think about that. How long do you think their suppliers can even stay in business if they're selling below cost? Of course, all the rest of the retailers are going to take up the slack on that, too. And pass along the price difference to us, the consumer.)
Then, of course, they spread like a virus. Opening in new towns with articifically under-priced goods (because they can afford to take the hit for long enough to kill the local competition.) And once the local competition is gone, they start raising their prices back to the regular level. And they move on to another victim.
In my opinion, they're much more of a monopoly than the ol' Ma Bell ever was. And still, no one stops them. So, I vote with my feet and go elsewhere. |

It not just that but the quality of the products. I use non-toxic products myself that I cannot buy there. Plus I hate the crowds. Jennifer |

It is great that you are sensitive to those issues....I am definitely a comparative shopper and want a great deal no matter what.....If I am only spending a few bucks I dont think it will change things much. Its like 6 degrees of separation....pretty soon anything and everything can be connected with something good or something bad but the degree of that is up for us to decide. Even organizations like Peta is associated with animal cruelty sometimes...so I guess we have to look at the greater good. |

All corporations located overseas use "cheap labor". Mexican wages are about $2 per hour. But those jobs are better paying than what they have, so it helps, not hurts, those people. As we buy low cost product, companies expand overseas production, which creates more jobs in those countries, which create wealth and a middle class. Eventually, overall labor rates rise over time and their rates become competitive, it isn't worth expanding production there anymore, and another country with low wages begins getting jobs. So it is a good thing, helps the country and ours. |

If you use this as your only reason not to shop Walmart then you better give up almost all other stores period. Look at the labels in any store...you don't find many made in America labels anymore. Corporations only contract with manufacturers for their prices, number of goods, etc. The small factory or company where these people work set their pay rates. What about your job? Who sets your pay? Not Walmart I am sure....Walmart sets the pay for their employees and their benefits, they cannot be responsible for what another company pays it's employees. |
