Walmart and sweatshops (need a crash course) so whats so bad about them...do they do anything positive?
About 20,000 families nationwide have fallen below the official poverty line as a result of Wal-Mart’s expansion, a 2006 study says.
During the last decade, dependence on the food stamp program nationwide increased by 8%, while in counties with Wal-Mart stores the increase was almost twice as large at 15.3%. For most Wal-Mart employees, the hours worked and the wages paid do not help their families transition out of poverty, the study said.
The study, which sought to identify the independent effect of Wal-Mart stores on changes in poverty rates, found that one of the greatest effects of a Wal-Mart opening is the closing of mom-and-pop operations. The study says that "by displacing the local class of entrepreneurs, the Wal-Mart chain also destroys local leadership capacity."

Yes. They make things much less expensive than they would otherwise be. They make it possible to afford to buy things that would be too expensive to afford otherwise.

They are just like any other store... out to make you think you are paying less.
P.S. I loved your answer to the 'suspense paper' girl (BOOM BOOM BOOM...). haha Good answer.

Why walmart and sweat shops together. 2 entirely different entities. Wal Mart is not as evil as some would have you think. To get a true feeling for walmart work for them and you will see. If people hate them it's because they did not think of it first. As for sweat shops I have complained of working in them at one time but that was a lie.

Imagine you had a medium sized town with a couple of grocery stores, a jeweller, a hardware store, a music store, three clothing stores and a community newspaper.
Assume as well that many of them paid higher than minimum wage, sold products that were made in North America and
assisted with health insurance.
Along comes Walmart, under the guise of being competitive with its cheap, imported Asian products and rolled back wages. Purchasing in such massive volume alone gives WalMart a huge advantage.
What happens? All of the stores are forced to lay off staff and reduce wages in order to bring prices down to compete. The town's paying less but making less in return. Any loyalty the town's stores once had to products made by American workers is dahed, as they're forced to import cheaply made knock offs to survive.
The newspaper? Business isn't as good now that most of the small businesses have shut down and the only potential advertiser is WalMart. Who chooses to distribute their own flyers. (1)
There is one kid's baseball team in town, sponsored by WalMart but the ones sponsored by the hardware store and two of the grocery stores no longer have a sponsor.
The town's chamber of commerce is a joke.
The funny thing is Walmart could afford to pay its employees more. It just won't. (2)
