NOTE: all potential problems are definitely debatable.
1. wal-mart pays wages below scale. lower wages lead to economic stress within a community.
2. wal-mart operates on low margin, high volume. This lures consumers away from locally owned businesses.
3. wal-mart is Americas largest importer of foreign goods. This hurts the American manufacturers, its workers, and the trade deficit.
4. wal-mart is a price first retailer. This reduces the value of actual quality products.

I do not see WalMart as a problem. No one is forced to work there or spend money. Employees and Consumers have the free will to work and/or shop at any other store.
Since you have already picked a side in the debate it would serve you better to do your own research. Your essay should include actual facts and data, not rely on the suppositions of others. |

Find out more about their purchasing practices. I.E: Do they require their venders to put merchandise in on consignment? Or do they require products to be put in their store with no interest on the inventory placed there for a certain length of time? An independent
cannot possibly compete with that. Auto Parts association tried to sue Walmart several years ago but had poor lawyer, poor prep so it was thrown out of court.
Walmart in Michigan no longer researches where to place a store--they just put one down the street from any Meijer store, a Grand Rapids based chain local to the midwest.
Personally, I shop Walmart for the $4.00 prescriptions and that is all. Have found their produce moves slow and won't last when i bring it home. Meat they sell is marginal as far as I am concerned. I am sure I am biased toward my local Meijer store but, hey, they are Michigan based, they were here first, and they run an outstanding store in my area. |
