I hate to say this yet again....But I'm going to. People talk about the "evils" of walmart, but no one is being forced to work at walmart. in fact the wage of the average walmart employee is 15 cents higher than the national wage at 10.55 an hour. Now in a larger city 10.55 cents an hour isn't much, but in a small city of only 10,000 people 10.55 cents will pay a house payment and allow an o.k. living. I couldn't live on it, but then again, I have a degree. for the average retail zombie, walmart is great. it pays for people to have jobs that would not have had a job otherwise. look at all the 16 year olds that get to make extra money working a minimal job. its a far cry better than the horrible fast food giants. besides, even if walmart was owned by the devil himself, I'd still buy most of my cleaning stuff there.
Bottom line. if you don't want to make terrible money...improve your skill set. |

I agree with banned. Also, please remember that Wal-Mart has done more to lift millions of people all over the world out of poverty than ANY government program or union. |

No, Wal-Mart isn't the devil. And if the union gets in, the employees will be making LESS than they make today, because their "union dues" (legalized extortion) will be deducted from every paycheck. There are NO benefits to unionization. |

for unions...against unions...its a choice. just because they have one doesnt mean you have to be in one. walmart didnt become one of the biggest retailers in this country for nothing. they offer decent(not great)products at an affordable price for the blue collar "working man." i shop at both walmart as well as target personally. walmart offers some things that target doesnt carry. but again..its a choice. if walmart is so evil...then qjuit shopping there. if its so bad...go somewhere else and quit your bitching. if its as bad as everyone says it is...they will at some point in time go out of business. just remember...in middle small town america such as where i live...our options are few and far between. we're lucky to even have a walmart and not drive an hour away to do our grocery shopping. |

You know, normally I'd agree, but that doesn't make Wal-mart the devil. I, personally dislike Wal-Mart and all it stands for, but the devil? |

Yes, Walmart spelled backwards is devil.
I knew that.............
Mac Donalds is the assistant devil.
Did you know that?
Mac Donald is not the old guy that had a farm.
(Farm is spelled E-i-E-i-O!)
Can't help it, I still go to both of 'em.
But I am trying to quit.
Seriously - Unions are the devil, too. They started out with a good idea, but now it is just like the government. Cancer! It will eat you alive! |

WalMart is not the Devil; you sound a little like Hugo Chavez! Nobody is forced to work there, gets shipped off to Siberia or a Gulag. If it's not good, work elsewhere! You don't have to shop there, either.
But a lot of people low on money get more for their dollar shopping there. It's a highly efficient marketer thsat is big enough to push producers around a little and pass the savings on to their customers.
Many people do not like their unions; unions bring their own problems. I was in a union and led an effort to decertify it when it got corrupt; that union is no more. |

Unions are only good if you are one of those types who doesn't want to work for what they get, are okay with someone stepping over you just because their skin is darker than yours, and need protection because you are the type who tends to get in trouble at work a lot. Otherwise, a non-union job is fine; everyone knows this, but with the socialist world we live in today, people expect something for nothing. |

Wal-Mart does not pay minimum wage. Furthermore, Wal-mart CEO has come out in favor of minimum wage increase.
You see, if the minimum wage is increased it will KILL any small businesses that want to compete with it. The government will have done the job of erecting barriers to entry in the retail market for Wal-Mart.
But I'm sure you are highly intelligent enough to have already known all that. |

Don't hate me for saying this, but WAL*MART employees a few hundred-thousand of us civilians. They have a lot of problems when it comes to employee's... but they can afford them. They have the dough to pay off any serious threats. Like the fore mentioned in the Question by David Tovar.
But because of of not placing a single dime in customer care... Sam Walton has built one of the top 5 companies this country has ever seen. I thoroughly believe that there theory is based on the fact that if you want customer service... or employee care... you can leave.
For two reasons this is true. First, there will always be a lower class in this country and people will shop at WAL*MART, just to find that next deal on a plastic trash can. Second, Is that many people, my friends included, work for the Walton's, and find that they will always have a job. Hence the pay many be low and the conditions are crappy, but in our scared-society we live in today nothing beats job security. |

this thread made me lawl.
1. If Wally World went union, it would be horrible for customers and employees.
2. I have spent six years in retail. Retail is where i started when I was fifteen. Someone said "Retail Zombies" and I would like to counter with the reality of you having a really hard time if we weren't there. Retail Saviors would be better. ;-)
3. People who say walmart is evil, shop at walmart when no one is looking and deny it all the way to their to their graves.
Yes walmart is a huge company. One of the top ten largest in the world at this point. But they got there fair and square. The incarnation of the American Dream on Sam Walton's part anyway. If there is a messed up business, it's thrift stores. People think "it's everybody's garage sale." in reality, lots of the stuff people selling their belongings to make rent or pay the heating bill or but food for them and/or children. Thank God for Walmart giving people jobs and everybody else the ability to buy the things they need. |
