They've put alot of small mom and pop stores out of business. Cheap prices often means cheap product and shabby service. Little local stores provided better service and higher quality products - some thing that's nearly impossible to find now-a-days; you get what you pay for. Like the Cheer's song: its nice to go where every body knows your name. |

they probably hurt the smaller businesses that cant compete with the prices but i think that they create alot of jobs and help customers save alot of money to spend on other things (homes, cars, etc). Basically, they take the rediculous markups that other stores create and pass it on as savings instead of profits for the company. |

heres the deal with wal mart. they have the cheapest prices because they buy in bulk, larger quanities then any of their competition. the more you buy, the cheaper the price is. they have the market locked down. but this is the nice thing that wal mart does, they dont want to pay taxes on all of the money that they make so they invest it into other companies. so now that they have partial ownership in companies that they are competing with, they win twice. so to answer the question, they are helping the rich get rich, but the poor are just outta luck |

now more people are shopping in the walmart market because of the great prices :)
And more people shopping means more people spending and more people spending means more money in are economy :) |

Hurting. I think Walmart hurts everybody who either are working for them on the bottom end of the hierarchy. The reason why Walmart stuff is so cheap is because they don't give their employees health benefits plus they do own sweat shops in China to make clothes. Walmart does not have a union for workers, I think the head honchos in that company are able to harass workers and get away with it. I have shopped at Walmart before. Specifically, the American Walmarts are terrible. I wouldn't think them so bad if they had unions. They have Walmart unions in Germany, but only because other countries deem it illegal not to have unions.
Walmart monopolizes and runs the small businesses out of town. The small businesses generally specializes in one area.

I think that they are helping. The stuff that you buy there is better quality than the dollar store junk.
Unfortunately, they have found other less than desirable ways of cutting costs. I worked for Sam's Club for over 2 years and they don't give anyone full time unless they are in management. However, they do offer part-time employees benefits,which many companies do not.
There has been a lot of controversy surrounding walmart, but i have to say that in my experience that they are a great company to work for. A part-time job is better than no job. |
