He was first a "Republican" who wanted to move the party to be more progressive.

He left the party to start his own "The Bull Moose Party" and later became a Democrat.

You should note that BOTH the Republican and Democratic parties at that time were quite a bit different than they are today.

Teddy Roosevelt was a progressive reformer of the Republican Party. You could say that he eventually became a Democrat after his disappointment and dissatisfaction with Taft's performance in office.

he founded the bullmoose party and later was a democrat .

Teddy was a Republican. However after 2 terms of being president, he appointed Taft and Taft was elected by the Republicans. Teddy wasn't happy with Taft and tried to run as in independent in the Bull Moose party.
