Was it right that high level bank exectives got bonuses in the US bank bailout?
As far as my experience goes with bonus money, I have only received a bonus if I did very well at my job. So correct me if I am wrong, but if you are in charge of a failing company and get bailed out by the government, should you get a bonus?

And if it's not right, should the US government attempt to recover any and all bonus monies paid to those same bank executives?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081221/ap_on_bi_ge/executive_bailouts AP study finds $1.6B went to bailed-out bank execs

Dude , you're trying to apply logic to a place that is foreign to logic
they stack the deck in their favour by loading the boards with all their cronies
they repay the favour by doing the same in kind
it's only suckers like us that the rules apply too

Kitty 2
NO of course not. That's why they went belly up.. Too many exectives were being paid too much to start with. The A holes should be eating 10 year old fruitcakes in my opinion.

NO. They should get a lump of coal for a bonus. They are going bankrupt. Why should they get a bonus?

No!! They should be sending people like you and I their bonus checks this year, after all they've screwed up the economy.

No it was not right. Legal maybe but not right

On one hand, only 0.23% of the bailout money was used for executive bonuses, but considering the vast amount of illiquid assets that these banks need to liquidate, that's a big chunk of change to be wasting on bonuses. The purpose of the bailout was pretty explicit... and the $1.6B in bonuses doesn't even speak to the salaries these people are earning. I could see paying consultants that much money to help them liquidate, but this is being used as frickin' REWARD money. Reward for WHAT?
Getting the bailout money from the government, of course.

No, they should be sleeping out on the street

No it's not right and furthermore, how can you afford to give bonuses if you're failing??? That's not what those funds were allocated for. If the government can recover bonuses then it should recover the 50 billion dollars in retirement funds that that guy stole from all those hard-working people.

No they should be prosecuted for stealing public funds!!!!!

It is true that these banking execs did get bonuses...

...and here all along I thought bonuses were for good performance. This seems to prove this whole bailout deal is just welfare for the wealthy. They screwed up with other peoples money, but they didn't loose a dime of their own money.

If by "right" you mean "fair to a reasonable observer", I say no.

If you mean "legal as defined by their contracts" I say yes.

The Government should have required revocation of the bonuses as part of the agreement. They did not.
Therefore, the bunuses must be given as written in their legally binding contracts.

Not "fair" but "right".

. .
They got a$$loads of money poured into their bank. How is that a bad thing for the bank?
