miri | We have received an invoice from Robinson & Co (Mr. Mathew?), to pay for an ad we have never placed!? |
To make it short...
We are professionals and we know how to place an ad. We own designer packages and design our own ads prior to the print! We keep track of all records and set up purchase orders.
However, we had a call from Mr Mathew XXX (never uses his surname) from Robinson & Co. about a magazine named Shout with a fire attachment. Apparently they have placed an add for us and require a payment!
They sent us an ivoice for this job and copy of our add which looks like designed in Word using Word Arts!!! Also none of details on the invoice seem to be right. We can't find the company (they do not exist in the location stated), people or phone number.
Unfortunately, they are calling in and demand the payment!
How should we get rid of them? Whom to contact to investigate this?
Thank you for your answers. |

Unless they can show you proof in writing of your order (i.e. an official purchase order or letter) then they don't have a leg to stand on. |

Try your local Trading Standards Office - sometimes called the Office of Fair Trading.
Maybe tell the Police that you're being 'harrassed' for payment of money that you don't owe? |

Contact trading standards they may be aware of the company, and they will be able to help you. If they aren't aware of them than can investigate on your behalf if they are fraudulently trying to get money from you. You could also check with companies house that they are registered, all companies should be.
It definitely sounds like a scam, we had a company contact us claiming we had agreed to sponser a local schools library, they didn't know the name of the school and guessed at it being named after the road our company is on. |

This sort of thing happened to a friend of mine. He's a mobile mechanic and he got a call from a company offering him advertisement in their magazine. He told them to send some information out and he would look at it. Months later he received an invoice and they showed him a copy of an advert they had placed without his permission, which was really unprofessional and had a very dodgy picture on it. They kept threatening him with court action if he didn't pay it. He wrote to them asking for written proof that he had asked them to place it, and gave them a list of costs he would be claiming from them if he had to attend court, including loss of wages, travel, solicitors costs, and hotel costs for them both if it was over a certain distance away. Then he told them to go ahead and prosecute him.
They wrote back pretty soon and told him they had decided to cancel his outstanding bill as a gesture of good will. |

This scam went around Manchester companies last year, speak to the police in your area. |

Is it possible it is a case of mistaken identity?
Maybe there is another company out there with the same name and Mathew XXX did a sloppy google search and found you?
Maybe do a google search on your company name and see if there are any similarly named companies in the distribution of Shout magazine. I googled Shout magazine and looks like there are actually a few. |

Hi,
Sorry to hear of your predicament. I am a Crime Reduction Officer for my local Police Force and have come across this scam quite a few times.
Most of these scams seem to originate from the Liverpool area the company name at the moment escapes me (sorry) but it may well be worth speaking to a local Crime Reduction Officer in Liverpool that may be able to help further.
Anyway to your immediate situation, a lot of the scams rely on their "victim" being intimidated into making the payment, which you would be surprised a lot just pay up. Ask for proof of purchase order for the advertisement (which obviously they won't be able to produce because you never signed anything). They may even threaten to visit your premises with the bailiffs and recover goods to the value of the debt. If this happens you are to ring 999 straight away to prevent a breach of the peace.
If the debt collectors take a court order out to recover the value of the debt, they must inform you of this process, if they do, you aproach the court and ask for it to be suspended which will render them powerless to recover the goods.
Furthermore contact your local constabulary and inform them of this scam so that they have a record of you reporting the matter to them, then in the event of anyone turning up thay will already know half the story and shoudl respond to your request for assistance promptly.
Good Luck |

Tell them you will report the matter to the police - you are either a victim of identity theft (somebody placing an order on your behalf) or - as seems more likely - this firm is demanding money with menaces. |
