What's with the Viacom-Time Warner situation?
So can someone explain what is really happening? Why is Viacom increasing prices only Time-Warner and not other cable providers?
And does the "demanding" by calling the phone number actually work?
The only reason why Viacom is asking for more money is because they've lost $8 billion this year. Do you know why they are probably losing money? They are probably losing ad revenues because their ratings having been going down for years. Why are they asking TWC customers to pay more for channels they watch less? Aren't MTV and VH1 supposed to be music channels? MTV and VH1 only show music videos when people are asleep and they just show sleazy reality shows all day. Besides the early morning young children's shows, Nickelodeon sucks now too. What is Viacom's solution to this? They want us to pay extra for their other packages like they are HBO or something just so we can watch old and non-mainstream music videos. Don't get me wrong, I hate Time Warner Cable's monopoly on all of the apartment complexes in my area though. Time Warner is able to increase its rates no matter what because I can't get any other cable service and my apartments don't allow satellites. I think Viacom was able to squeeze more money out of other cable providers.

Viacom's shows provide 20% of TimeWarner's viewers but Viacom only gets paid 2.5% of the TimeWarner gross. So Viacom is subsidizing all the crummy shows that no one watches. They want more. That's why they want you to call and demand Dora the Explorer for your child..

The following is my humble opinion supported by quotes from the article provided in this question.
I do not believe the statement by Time Warner below :
"The issue is that they have asked for an exorbitant increase in their carriage fees and their network ratings are sagging," he said. "Basically we're trying to hold the line for our customer."
I doubt Time Warner gives a flying fig about keeping costs down for it's customers. I think their knickers are in a bunch because of the statement below:
"Part of the disagreement is that most of the popular shows are rerun on Web sites where Viacom collects advertising revenue that it does not share with Time Warner, Dudley said."
"We don't think that's fair," he said. "They're trying to have their cake and eat it too online, where anybody can get it for free."
I doubt Time Warner cares about the above being fair they just want some of the online advertising dollars before they agree to the fee increase.
Where I live Time Warner viewers will lose the local CBS channel as well because they are owned or affiliated with Viacom. Makes me glad that I have Directv if I am going to pay out the nose I rather see what I am paying for. I doubt Time Warner will compensate it's viewers for the time they will be without the Viacom channels.

They stuck a deal...you will see it in the next bill or two.

~~Viacom wants an increase for their programming. Time Warner does not want to raise it's rate to their customers to pay for it. Therefore, Time Warner say no to their demands.
In this economy, it isn't right for consumers to have to pay more for already high cable bills. In my opinion, I think it's good Time Warner is protecting our costs.~~
