chyeriagal | What's your opinion of a Wal-mart being built in this situation? |
In Scranton, Pennsylvania, a new Wal-mart is currently in the planning stages of being built. Some people are against this, saying that since we already have one less than 8 miles away. People are concerned about bad traffic and whether or not it will make a profit due to the close proximity to the other one. I am personally for the Wal-mart. What do you think about this, and do you know any positive pro-Wal-mart sites? |

Everybody "hates" Wal-Mart. Everybody "hates" Wal-Mart so much that it continues to grow year after year. I guess that's from everybody "not shopping" there. You know everybody says "I don't shop at Wal-Mart." It's amazing how a business can be the biggest in the world if everybody "doesn't shop there." lol |

I actually don't like Wal-mart much...
But putting two stores a small 8 miles away is just a terrible idea I think. It's not like Starbucks where they put one on each corner, the Wal-mart is a massive department store that fulfills a need for a very wide area and having two in close proximity will over-saturate that market... |

The problem with Wal-Marts is that they kill small businesses. If there are any Mom & Pop stores in that area, they tend to be driven out of business by having a Wal-Mart nearby. It's easy for us to say "well tough luck for Mom & Pop", but when it is YOUR family, then it is a disaster. |

We had something simular happend in South Carolina. Walmart wanted to build a supercenter right across from a local high school! Well the permits and everythign went through but the community refused to let it be built there. It never went up. Instead they have to find an alternate location that will be benificial for the community and themselves. The old Walmart was only 1 mile away. So they announced that they would close down the old Walmart when they made the new one! It never got built to this day! More than likley if it does open up a new store it will close down the old one in due time. The reason I think the community is against it is maybe it will make property taxes go up or create some other tax. Here the concern was that they was worried kids would cut school and go to Walmart to hang out! Well school was only 1 mile away and they didnt cut to hang out at Wally's World. I think here it was more about congestion and taxes going up on surrounding property and property being rezoned! Good Luck! |

Walmart stores go up in the areas with the greatest population...if your town, city is growing you'll probably see more..that's just way it is..... |

My guess is that they've done their homework and found that it would be profitable. When I've been there, the Dickson City Wal-Mart has been very busy. If the Wilkes Barre one is the same way, that would justify the new one. I'm guessing that the proposed location you're talking about is Montage Mountain. If so, I think they're properly spaced to not take business from eachother. I don't think they should do a super walmart, but a regular one could be supported by the population of Moosic, Pittston, and South Scranton. |

I always think the more Walmarts the merrier! Bad traffic will happen sooner or later, for whatever reason or store opening. And about the profits...Walmart ALWAYS makes profits, no matter if there are 1o Walmarts lined up right next to each other. |
