A number that identifies a bank where an account is based. To do an electronic debit or credit you need the bank routing number and the account number.
The numbers are printed (encoded) on the bottom of checks.

The bank routing number is like the bank's ID number.
If you look on one of your checks, you will see two sets of numbers at the bottom. One is your account number and the other is the bank's routing number.

When you open an account and get your starter check book (that day) the back of the book has 2 bank cards (put in your wallet) The cards are paper and have your account number and routing number on the bottom. Your routing number is for other institutions to access your account, whether to pay a bill or have money direct deposited into the account. It's a way for collecters to take money from your account (You usually agree with them on the amount to be taken and the dates each month it will be withdrawn from the account BEFORE giving your routing number) For a job it's an easy way to deposit your check right into your account rather than get an actual check to cash (benefit of direct deposit is by 8am on your payday your money's in the bank rather than waiting to get off and physically cash it yourself) Hope this helps!
