I turned 13 years old in september, and i have been wanting to buy a few expensive things. The only problem is that my family is poor, and i don't know the first thing about getting (or knowing where to find one) a job.
Please tell me if Wal-Mart will hire me at 13, because i have seen a relative working there and it looks like a great job to get started at.
If they wont hire, What other businesses would i try?

Most places won't hire till 16. I know a few that will hire at 15 with work permit. Walmart will not hire till 16 my sister tried to get a job she's 15 they told her she had to be 16. Good Luck |

At 13, your places to try are limited but there are options. In most cities, you have to be at least 15 with parental permission. I think Wal-mart is 18. The reason for age constraints is because if there is machinery or chemicals involved, there are national regulations that prevent children from working at those places. I would check salons/barber shops(washer boy/girl or sweeper), Local movie theater, and neighbors. You can ask your neighbors if they need the lawn mowed or if you are in a snow area-sidewalk cleaned. Walking pets or baby sitting. Ask local businesses around you if they have anything that you can do. Explain your plight and they may know someone if they can't themselves. Please be very careful and have your parents involved for any job you may decide to take so they can make sure it is ok. Wow, I just found a site for you. I don't know what state you are in so hopefully the sites will still help you. I also just thought of something, are you good in any subjects and think you can tutor someone in that subject? That's a place for extra money. Maybe you can start your own business. I don't know if your city still participates in the old tradition of kids delivering papers but if they do, that should help too. Good Luck and Happy Holidays!
Tips for getting a job and retaining it:
Go to the Job interview in a suit and if you don't own one, your best clothing. No Jeans, tennis or t-shirts. Be on time or early for interview and when you go looking for jobs, filling out applications, dress as if you are going for an interview. Hair kempt, no piercings besides basic one hole earrings.
Once employed, continue to be early or on time. This is the number one reason that some employers don't hire teens. If you show yourself to be responsible, it can lead to raises and promotions. |

No. 14 is too yound. some places 15. But 13, you are pretty much still a child. People change and mature alot between 13 and 15. Wait and you'll see that for sure. |

16 is the standard age to hire (otherwise it's considered child labor).
Walmart as a national business probably won't let you work there, although you can always try to apply anyway.
Try looking for jobs in places that are local (like restraunts) instead of national and international. They tend to be less strict on their age policies. |

Walmart hires at 18 and restaurants hire at 16 (most)
what you would like to try is going to restaurants or newly opened businesses and passing out flyers for some money it won't be much but your really young and then do what any other 13 year old would do labor work (yard work, garden work, etc.,) or babysit...and if play anything thing (drums, guitar, cello, etc.,) try giving lessons then lets see theres always the news paper |
