high street retail companies hire people as mystery shoppers to go and shop in their shops...
they are looking and reporting back on...
cleanliness of the store
availability of staff
helpfulness of staff
knowledge of staff
availability of stock
general level of fill
number of out of stock lines
time taken to shop
time taken to get through the tills or pay points
product displays
promotions
answers given to specific questions on products or services offered
etc
the hiring company wants to know what the actual shopping experience is like for their customers...
the stores are targeted to achieve certain marks by the mystery shoppers and sometimes bonus or awards are given to stores for achieving high scores in this area
the idea is that the stores don't know who the mystery shopper actually is...the idea being that from the stores point of view every customer could be a mystery shopper - keeps training standards and service standards high |

They are people who are given the spec to go into a shop and ask for specific items, and sometimes even specific people, and see how they area treated as customers, how the shop looks, how other customers are treated, what merchandise is out, etc.
You don't earn a lot of money doing it. |

Usually people who come in to a shop for example and act like a completely normal customer but they are looking for good customer service etc
Also, if you are a shop that seels items like knives or computer games, the "mystery shopper" may be under age and try to buy one knowing he/she should be refused it.
If you do sell something like the to a mystery shopper you can be sued for loads of money.
Theyre basically just shop checks i suppose |

They can be looking for any number of things:
Knowledgeable staff, how to deal with awkward customers, or just politeness and speed of service.
These details are then passed on to head office. |

These are audits conducted by the clients on us.
Usually they call us and check the quality of the calls and see if we are following the procedures as per their guidelines.
We would receive their feedback the following day with the list of people who messed up on the protocol. |
