What are some alternative ways to distributing weekly paychecks to employees?
My company currently has 140+ employees and paychecks are distributed every Friday afternoon by our receptionist.

The paychecks are given to the receptionist at 2:00 pm and employees are allowed to come pick up their paychecks after that time. The receptionist keeps a list of each employee that will receive a paycheck and marks their name off the list when the employee receives his or her check.

This causes many employees to congregate in our lobby at once which is distracting and noisy. We need a solution that will aleviate this problem without allowing the paychecks to pass through too many hands.

My idea is to give each department manager their subordinate employees' checks on Friday to be distributed by the department manager but this may cause the paychecks to pass through too many hands, which is what I am trying to avoid.

Any suggestions?

We offer direct deposit but many employees do not have bank accounts or are not interested. We would still have to distribute pay stubs.

Feeling Mutual
How you get them their paychecks, is irrevelant so long as you get them their paychecks. I like your idea of having their department manager deliver them personally. It gives a warm personal touch to it. If you don't trust a manager to hand them out, fire that manager.

However, I detect an undertone here, that you don't want your employees in the lobby. That is bad for morale. Treat your employees like kings, for they make the money for the company.

Maybe you could stick with the receptionist handing them out, but break it down into a schedule. Say starting at 2pm last names beginning in A-H can pick up checks. At 3pm last names I-P and 4pm last names Q-Z. That would help with some of the crowding and still leave her with an hour at the end of day to finish up her work.

assign different times for different departments to come pick them up. maybe get the checks to your receptionist at an earlier time if possible.
have a sign up sheet for different times to pick them up.

Mail them their paychecks a couple days ahead of time so that its in their mail box on Fridays? That's how it was at my old job.

Actually, you have part of the answer already. When I was managing a company before, we had 300+ employees. We used ADP payroll service. It was simple and easy. Some employees wanted direct deposit and some didn't. So, we had ADP direct deposited to the employees who did and gave us payroll checks for employees who didn't. After the accounting department, payroll accountant reviewed the checks and paperwork, we had the payroll accountant handed out the paychecks in a sealed security envelope. Employees who wanted to pickup their checks will need to go to the accounting department rather than congregating at your lobby.

Try this and it may alleviate the problem you have.
