Best advice I ever got from a former boss: Don't get into a pi**ing contest with a skunk.
In other words, don't get involved in disputes with others, especially with negative, nasty people. It doesn't pay. It just makes you look as bad as them, even if they're the bad guys and you're the good one.
Also (although this is a generational thing...it's advice from a Baby Boomer that Gen Xers probably would disagree with): Do more than is asked of you. There's a saying: Underpromise and overdeliver. You don't want to seem like you're promising too little, but always overdeliver.
And here's an absolute golden rule: Make your boss look good. Even if you don't like your boss. Even if your boss could give the boss on "The Office" a run for the money. Never, ever undercut your boss or make him/her look bad. Make him/her look good.
There are plenty more, but those are all winners.
