What are some of the reasons an employer would not give two weeks notice when employee is getting laid off?
I worked at a fairly small veterinary hospital for over two years. Great co-workers, great boss... just a great place to work. I was well liked, many people relied on me to get through their day, and I felt like a part of that family. Unfortunately, my position was eliminated due to the declining financial situation of the hospital (and the economy), and I was laid off. The worst part is that I was told in the middle of my shift, and had to leave right away without saying goodbye to anyone. It felt like my heart was ripped out of my chest. I'm not being allowed to come back and visit either. Now I know employers are not required to give two weeks notice when they lay someone off, but I would've expected nothing less from my boss. It's not like her to do something so cold and heartless. What on earth are some of the reasons why she would not give me a two week notice? I can only view this from an employee point of view, and need to understand it from an employer point of view.

She didn't want you to walk off with any of the urine samples.

Considering the economy, she needed to cut NOW. And then, there are employees who 'get even' - consider the suffering animals when someone doesn't give it their all....Have a healthy and happy leap year!

i've known a lot of places to use the layoff as an excuse to firing someone. i would look more into it, because if you are not allowed to go back then maybe they filled your position and you should take legal action because they fired you without reason.

Just another day.
Normally behavior like that would indicate, theft, or some kind of lack of trust. Based on what you have said I would call and ask if you can use her as a reference on your resume' if she says no then you should ask why not.

Good luck

your boss is not a good boss for firing she hates it and never likes doing it like most bosses. So when she has to fire some one she wants it done quick and doesn't want to deal with the person. if you snap and cal her a B*tch in front of co-workers she will feel horrible. and now she doesn't want you back because no one wants to think about what happened they just want to forget it and move on. It sucks but thats what happens when you mix emotions and buisness.

well from the sounds of it you did something worse and they don't want you coming back. And most of the time they don't have to give you the two week notice they can just fire you.

It's not illegal. Maybe you're taking it too personal, I'm sure she would have done it to anyone in your position. If many people relied on you to get through the day your position wouldn't have been eliminated, don't look at a job as a place of friendship and security. Business is business, sorry it had to happen to you but, frankly, it's happening to a lot of people.

It sounds like your boss being a woman was visibly quite upset about the possibility of losing her business from the great recession hitting all of us. Your right to feel the way you do René, I have been in the same situation more times then i can count or remember. I know the sudden pain and heartbreak not to mention the immense frustration you must be feeling. If you feel you can at least go back quietly to say goodbye to everyone she can't do nothing about that. Try to get some closure from the experience as soon as you can and focus on the next position if possible.
Take a little time to relax and calm yourself down first. Have a good cry if you need to then suck it up and move on. This world is cruel and heartless sometimes, that's the way it goes. Close this door and soon another opens. Look ahead and forget the past.
My sincerest best wishes and good luck to you for a new position.
