What are some tricks to stand out in an interview?

Do your research. Find out about the company. How long it has operated, CEO's name. Any awards they have won recently you should know about and any major subsidiaries that they have.

Ask questions which show that you know this.

You should always ask questions. If they say at any point. Do you have a question, have one. Just one. Don't go on too long!!! lol

It makes you look intelligent and quick on the uptake. If you ask to clarify something or for further information it is obvious that you have been listening well.

Take your cues from the interviewer. If they are quick and brisk, you be that too. If they are laid back and casual you can relax a little more, but still stay focused and professional. She can afford to be laid back. She's already got a job. lol!!

Practice your handshake. Make it firm, dry and relatively short lived. DO NOT crush the person's hand. Shake a woman's hand a little less firmly. We wear rings and stupid men always hurt your hand by squeezing too hard. It puts us in a bad mood!!

Take all the standard suggestions, of course.

Also do some research into the company, and come prepared with questions about them. It will show your interest.

Finally, do a little something to stand out yet remain professional. You could use a dark green or navy ink instead of black to print your cover letter (a trick I learned after running out of black ink!). Or wear a standard suit, but with a subtle colour shade beyond the grey scale.

Don't go too crazy, like dye or spike your hair, even some bold glasses can scare off conservative employers. Find a blend of professional and individual, and be sure to tailor it to the company. Obviously you can take more risks at a more liberal company.

Good luck with the interview!

Have good eye contact.
When shaking hands, have a good grip.
Be 10 minutes early.
After the interview, send a personalized thank you for your time and interest in me and I look forward to hearing from them. It's worked everytime (so far.)

Your best bet, and it is not a trick, is to ask intelligent questions of the interviewer. Remember, you are interviewing the company as much as the company is interviewing you.
