NASDAQ, DOW Industrials and S&P 500 are three different groups of selected stocks in various industries. The performance of these statistical sets of stocks are used as harbingers of the performance of the stock market as a whole. The number changes every day because the stock prices of the companies that make up the sets of stocks change every day.

Ok, so now you know what the incides are. But the numbers.....well, simply put, the Standard and Poors 500 lists the top 500 companies in terms of value.....same with the other indices.......

all the three are names of indices of stock-market monitoring services. nasdaq is the one index monityoring IT majors, dow and standard & poor monitor various stocks. their reports (ratings) on various countries' economics are seriously taken by IMF, IBRD etc. and other credit rating companies. the "numbers" are referred in trade-parlance to index numbers put out by these indices indicating the volume of trade on specific stocks on a particular day at the stock exchange.
