You are represented by the professional association in case of lawsuits and when you're looking for a job. It gives a certain identity and recognition to your job title and lets employers and the rest of the world know that you are well connected and not alone.
Look at doctors associations, lawyers associations, etc. Very powerful associations which are almost impossible to attack. |

A good professional association can really enhance your career, and professional growth. The keyword here is 'good.' If it is large, and/or has solid field representation, if it offers continued education opportunities, if the dues are fair for the offerings. if it has current conferences, and local and State workshops, seminars, smaller specialized conferences, then you can stay abreast of state of the art best practices. Associations also offer other benefits, like health and life insurance discounts, auto insurance and/or rental car discounts. An Association's political action lobby can defend you if you get into legal hot water. Probably the biggest benefit of association membership is the professional networking advantage, both for general networking value, and job search contacts plus the more formal Job Bank that associations offer. A good association also is involved in college recruiting to ensure the field survives with new blood. I would question any professional who does not belong and is active in their association as it is the right thing to do. Join if you haven't. |
