They'll look to promote from within, look for experienced candidates from other retailers, or recruit from college campuses.

You really need either the education or the experience, but both would be best.

As far as personality requirements, you've got to love people. Merchandising is easy, it's dealing with your customers and employees that can be tricky.

A floor manager? From what I understand, most come up through the ranks and begin as sales associates. If you want to be considered for it without starting as an s.a. you'd probably need a college degree or equivalent, managerial/supervisory experience, good grooming & demeanor, and at least a little bit of a brain.

Manager?First not saying Walmart alone,a manager must be well versed in many aspects of the company. The manager must be able to lead.Leadership is motivating others to succeed and leading them to work as a team to achieve company goals.Discipline is of utmost importance. You must attend your work never play around pretend you are sick when actually lazy.As a manager you got to be resourceful. No amount of questions should be answered with "Duh...I don't know.."A manager can communicate and listen well.Customers are King should be the most important factor in satisfying your customers. They come once and come again.Go the extra mile at jobs, you always make others have pleasent surprises. They will not see you as store manager soon promotions lead you to mid management.Get this key factor in mind, Teamwork. You are not a glamorous person and as leader you have veto power over others, you must understand the opportunity and threats of your group and handle things mindfully.I have met courteous managers who handle enqueries well and with patience. As compared to a self-occupied person too busy for anyone alse, don't dream of being a manager. As we mature we know of sickness and problems. The people need your encouragement not your anger. They work to find money and take care of families, not to be too hard on them but spend two minutes genuinely caring.A painful experience of your subordinate can be removed and he knows you care and starts working happily again.I study management in university and was many times promoted to management, hope you get the dream job you want. And Pray for what is best for you,yup celebrate by making your mum and dad happy. The religion I practice says before venturing into something difficult, ask for your parents approval and prayers,And my big bro is in mid management in an oil n gas multi national company, now by,having my mum's blessing before interviews evaluations and stuff.Be prepared. My mum got a great saying."Say they shall choose a qualified person chances of one in a hundred. You be the hundreth my son."making my brother working to the max.Always be the chosen one whatever the odds may be.Good luck in your future undertakings.
