What are your opinions on the retail giant Target? Spec. shoppers and employees?
I work at Target as a manager. As a shopper, I love Target. As an employee, I am disatisfied.

We have no union- raises are once a year, and a good raise for a manager is about .75 cents and a good raise for a regular employee is about .25 cents. We do not get paid vacations. Managers have 1 week unpaid vacation and a few (I think 4) paid sick days. Regular employees might have collected about 3 days of vacation after a year, depending on how much they work.

Employees get promoted to managers, but VERY rarely are managers promoted to executives. Executive poisitons are filled by outsiders over I'd say 90% of the time.

We are over-worked and underpaid for the miracles they expect us to perform, and it's not just at my store, it's a problem at many stores.

Target's business model is the same as many retail stores. These jobs are not typically highpaying or come with many benefits. This is very much like a retail store in a shopping mall like Spencer Gifts or such. The raises you mentioned are pretty much standard.

As far as a the store is concerned, I think they market very well to a specific demographic and have a sound business model for growth.

I never shop at Target anymore. I have boycotted them now for two years. They will not let the Salvation Army collect money for the needy and also they support a lot of gay rights. The Target store where I live seems to be going down. I hope they all do.

To have someone who works for Target in management worried about their income and benefits, and career pathing tells me your company likely has a problem.. Targets are in 47 States and have 1,189 stores. They are not the worst large retailer by most accounts (Example Walmart is way worse). However in terms of benefits, companies with similar models have had much better retention and taken way better care of their people-- (Examples Starbucks, Costco).

Jenzen25 - the comment about Target banning the Salvation Army from their storefronts is actually true, unfortunately. Maybe in your area the bell ringers are just going against Target policy. The link below is from Target's website itself:

I, personally, am not crazy about Target, but only because I work for one of their competitors :)

i really like target, and the comment of the salvation army is not true. i live in texas and they are out there every year collecting money.
they have a great program that helps support local schools as well.

well first of all unions isn't the answer....unions destroy businesses and run them out the country! second of all the exec..should have the sense to promote and treat the people right, but then again they can also only afford so much! so i would either leave the company or try to approach hierarchy for some changes...or just be satisfied where u are at. It seems like there is no "win win" situation here if you want to climb the ladder~sorry!.
