Recession happens when the economy slows down because people stop buying spending, building etc.
The economy slows through people losing confidence in the "market"
This could be for a number of reasons from people becoming concerned about investments to war or lack of credit to allow borrowing or changes in what people want to buy and who makes it.
In a market economy growth is essential to keep the economy expanding to provide profit.
It has been suggested that economies cannot keep expanding, in the same way it is beginning to be recognised that we cannot keep consuming or using the world's resources without there being consequences.
Supporters of the system of market economics would say it is the best way, through competition and market forces, for effective effort to be put into production and expansion.
Alternative systems involving cooperation and lower standards of living are generally seen by many countries as subversive, not very effective and creating a discontent population who will be unhappy not to have as many consumer goods available. |

by defininition, a recession is 2 or more concecutive quaters of negative growth in the GDP (Gross Domestic Product). There are several causes that can contribute to a declining GDP: Inflation, national debt, War, speculation, currency crisis. |

When everyone has everything they need, so people don't spend so much. As a result, products have to change to stimulate new demand. But other factors, like increased costs of food, petrol, electricity and gas could cause recession simply because people have less disposable income to spend.
But technological change could cause recession, where old technologies and industries are superseded, so demand falls in favour of new products, but where demand is not yet enough to tip the balance in favour of the new products. Eventually it does - it is easier nowadays to buy a CD player than a record player, or a colour flat screen TV than a black and white analogue TV, compared to 20 years ago. |

The current recession is caused by debt. Americans in debt that can no longer afford to purchase new vehicles houses because credit and mortgage debt. This causes banks not getting their payments to make it harder to be approved for loans. Americans not spending their money on goods causes inflation. Inflation causes oil bought in USD to rise, Rising gas prices cause a rise in everything that is transported, which makes production costly, which causes factories to shut down, causing those in debt to sink further in debt, which then causes a snowball effect which when handled incorrectly, causes one day 777 DJI point drops. |

"Newspapers often quote the rule of thumb that a recession occurs when real gross domestic product (GDP) growth is negative for two or more consecutive quarters..."
"A recession has many attributes that can occur simultaneouly and can include declines in coincident measures of overall economic activity such as employment, investment, and corporate profits. Recessions are the result of falling demand and may be associated with falling prices (deflation), or, alternatively, sharply rising prices (inflation) in a process known as stagflation. A severe or long recession is referred to as an economic depression. Although the distinction between a recession and a depression is not clearly defined, it is often said that a decline in GDP of more than 10% constitutes a depression.[3] A devastating breakdown of an economy (essentially, a severe depression, or hyperinflation, depending on the circumstances) is called economic collapse."
Hope that helps, if not, i'll be glad to explain it in a much simple format :) |

What causes recession? Hmmm??? Now that's a question...money of course...or lack thereof. Lets look at the word "recession",,, Remember recess in elementary school? An organized break from the daily doldrums. Done every day and at the same time. Now look at the regularity of "recessions"throughout the ages. Not so "regular" but pretty darn convenient. Cut to the chase = The folks with all the cards. Lots of people lose alot of things BUT the "folks" in charge never do. Sound paranoid? Well then check the financial recs of the 1`929 crash and all the rest. The rich stayed rich didn't they? and the poor got poorer. It's the way it is. But as dylan said "The times they are a changin' " AMEN!!! Don't try to figure this stuff out just try and be a good person. |

We all know the definition of recession as it is tied to a decrease in GDP for two consecutive quarters. However the exact causes still remain a mystery. I offer these as possible causes. The FED Makes mistakes. There is a contraction in business. Unemployment increases while housing prices decline. Wars and financial crises elsewhere in the world can be attributed to recession. Overspending, high taxes, corporate fraud and investor pessimism can be traced back to recession. In the end a decrease in consumer spending is evident. Inflation will rise while personal income will fall. Consumers have less money to spend, and are spending more for less. When Companies reduce output and lay off workers, we all begin to know the definition of recession. A recession is hard to define. It's a lot like pornography in a way. It maybe hard to define, but you know it when you see it. Or in this case, feel it. I hope this helps. Lisa |
