Others have given you some good thoughts. I'll add this: Being in the right place at the right time to take advantage of the opportunities that come along is big-time important. For example, had IBM not decided to "farm-out" the operating system for their PCs but rather keep it in house there is a pretty good chance that nobody would have heard of Bill Gates or Microsoft today. This is not to take away Gates' talent or any of his other personal attributes. Obviously, IBM picked the right guy who delivered beyond their wildest dreams. But, had an executive up the line at IBM nixed the deal Bill would have been an "also-ran" in spite of his talents.
Many call this luck and I agree but being receptive to and recognizing the opportunity is often what decides between life's winners and losers. Being receptive to means having all the working attributes that others have mentioned. |
